NO NO NO NO NO NO NO....

Did you ever see the movie BIG? THe hotel he stays at with the hookers?? NO NO NO NO NO.

I will also say that I had a Aunt that lived there for years, she is currently in a nursing home, and she said the hookers used to help her with her bring in her groceries.

Now, has it changed since then?? Maybe its changed?? I have no idea....

I remember that scene from Big, where the kid says "St James, the people here must be religious" Surprisingly the current reviews aren't bad, and if you want to be in the middle of things you can't beat the location! Times Square has really been cleaned up since the 70s and 80s, I remember that there were blocks where I'd walk with my eyes on the ground because of all the sleazy characters and businesses around there, but there's been such a lot of gentrification and development that formerly sketchy neighborhoods look like they've had a makeover.

Yeah, I think you'll be fine. I was in NYC last summer for 10 nights. I was apprehensive- the last time I'd been there was 1972. HUGE change in Times Square and surroundings! I would be more worried about teeny weeny rooms than I would be about hookers and dealers!

Unless the rate is under $50, I think you can do much better via Priceline or Travelzoo specials.

I have been doing reviews from everywhere, trip advisor, orbitz, they all seem relatively good. We stayed at the Skyline last trip and I am gathering it is similar(a bit older, smaller). Any other suggestions. I just can't see paying $1400 for three nights and all the name brand hotels are coming out to that. I just need a place to sleep.

The Marriott Marquise comes up on Priceline for $115 or so. Other 4 stars similarly priced in Time Square area. How much is the hotel you are looking at?

how did you figure that one out?? I am not too familiar with Priceline. When I look the Marriott is over $400. The St. James is coming in about $265 a night. Any help appreciated. Looking to go Nov 11-14th. thanks!!

I live in NYC and rented a room at the Sheraton Manhattan for my DDs birthdat...it has a pool!:woohoo:

It was $200. a night, or so, and was at 51st and 7th avenue.

Wow. At the Price the St. James is, you could stay pretty much anywhere by bidding. Look at betterbidding.com and see the NYC info area. You can see which hotels come up at which price. You won't know which one you get until after the bid is accepted though.

Also, if you test out Hotwire, betterbidding is helpful in identifying which hotels, based on amenities, they are offering!

Get a good guide book, or go to quikbook just to get a good idea of the hotels in the general area, and check out individual hotel websites instead of trusting the chains. Don't be afraid to check out hotels that are several blocks outside of Times Square- it's NY, you are still "there"! (for example, the EconoLodge in Times Square is over $200 a night...why???) We stayed at the Buckingham on W57th and 6th Ave and were very happy with the location, and it's about a 12 minute walk to Times Square. Their summer special was about $229 a night for a large 2 room suite with kitchen. It was great!

I just stayed one night at the Skyline hotel for under $200 when most hotels were over $300 a night. Since there are 4 of us I don't dare to do priceline for NYC. We were there primarily visiting family so Times Square wasn't important to us. We did however visit the USS Intrepid since it is walking distance, free with our local science museum membership, and dh wanted to show us where he used to work. For us the location was great - an easy busride to grandpas and the same bus would then go right to Rockerfeller Center then Times Square and quieter to sleep at night.

My kids loved the Skyline hotel for the indoor pool. Sure it isn't a lap pool but at 6 and 10 they just want to play in the pool. We had a relaxing night playing in the pool all together. We also went to a neighborhood park where the kids played with kids from Manhattan. Dh grew up in the Turtle Bay area of Manhattan and still can't get over people actually wanting to go to Times Square vs staying far from it - like the combat zone area of Boston.

OP
Please do not book the Hotel St James for that kind of $.

First, are you driving into the city?
The Travel Inn is the only hotel that offers free parking in the city. Sometimes rates can be found as low as $140/ night.

For the dates you listed, please have a look at Radio City Apartments.
Very clean and location cannot be beat, steps from the Metro and steps from Rockefeller Ctr.
Studio apartment is $836.68 (for 2 people)
One bedroom is $1066.45 (two doubles, sleeps 4).
We've stayed in the one bedroom twice. Has a living room with sleep sofa and full kitchen as well.
These prices include tax. Prices are even lower if you book at www.hotelconxions.com.

Book this, then check priceline and hotwire closer to your trip. If you are more than 2 traveling, do not book with priceline. www.betterbidding.com and www.biddingfortravel.com are two good sites to review before bidding.
Weeknights are tough, rates are usually higher due to all of the business travelers in the city. Also, keep checking www.travelzoo.com closer to your trip for NYC Lodging specials. ALWAYS read trip advisor reviews before booking, make sure you know what you are getting into.

There are 4 of us(myself, my sil, my two kids) We are flying(got flights for $127 round trip!! and we did stay last time at Skyline, but it was just a bit too far(IMO) for where we walked. Several times I just had to get a taxi, my little one did a great job walking but we walked miles and miles and there were times I just had to get a taxi(this was 2 years ago) The taxi's were not too expensive, but a taxi in times square on a saturday night was the most scary experience of my life!:scared1: thanks for all the advise. Hoping travelzoo will have some specials too as it gets closer.
