Hi everyone - Next year we plan to take my sister and her family to Disney for President's week. I know it's a very busy time, but dear sis is a teacher, so her availability to travel is limited.

It will be me, dh, my two kids (7 and almost 6 at the time), my sister, her husband, her 5yo and her almost 3yo.

I own at SSR, so I want to book at my 11 month window to guarantee a room. Would you book a 2 bedroom or a treehouse? I don't think a grand villa is in the budget at this time.

If I decide on a 2 bedroom, would you try to change to another resort at the 7 month window?

Thanks in advance for your advice!

Just wanted to add tat this will be dsis' first trip to Disney world since she was little and the first trip for her girls. TIA!

One thing to consider is room configuration:

Treehouse:
Master has a queen bed and bathroom
Second bedroom has queen bed
Third bedroom has bunk beds
Living room has sleeper chair and sleeper sofa

SSR Dedicated 2-bedroom:
Master has king bed and bathroom
Second bedroom has 2 queen beds
Living room has sleeper sofa.

SSR Lock-Off 2-bedroom:
Master has king bed and bathroom (actually a 1-bedroom villa)
Living area has sleeper sofa (part of 1-bedroom villa)
Second bedroom has queen bed and sleeper sofa (actually a studio)
Since this is a studio, there is also a kitchenette. There is a connecting door between the studio and 1-bedroom.

With the kids ages, I would go with BLT if possible. Odds are you will be taking breaks during the day and spending most of your time at MK.

As far as Treehouse vs. 2 bedroom. Treehouse gives the adults their own rooms (although smaller). The kids would also not have to share beds (2 in bunks, one on the couch and one on the chair).
In a 2BR, one family will have to share the room with 2 queens (This may be better if they want the young kids together with them). The other family will get the king and the 2 kids will share the couch in the living room.

The treehouses are a bit of a trek to either of the pools with slides. The treehouse pool is close, but boring. The other thing of note with the treehouses is they take a bit longer to get to the parks as the buses go from THV to SSR.

we JUST got back from being on a family trip to SSR on President's week (I am a teacher as well, so we are stuck with high times too). we were in two treehouses (grandparents, parents, and kids in each for a total of 11) and absolutely loved them! my two year old asked me this morning, "where are the treehouses? I want back". hahaha. that being said, we lived the rest of the resort as well and can't wait to stay there too. we also had cars so used those occasionally but loved the walking access to the main resort pools, food, and even DTD. PM me if you have any specific questions.
BTW, the tree houses made it seem like it wasn't actually a crazy busy time ay Disney because you are sort of secluded. loved it.

If you get to your 11mo window and still can't decide, maybe my experience will help.

I had booked a 2BR SV at AKL in Jambo house at 11 months out (DH's brother, SIL and 2 DDs were going with us). They couldn't make it, so we decided to switch to a 2BR at SSR (DS17 and DD22 were going with us).

We made the switch about 2 months out and got exactly the room we wanted (SSR being such a large resort).

You can always book the treehouse and then switch later, since the treehouses fill up first. Of course, we went the first two weeks in December, and that's not a peak season.

You can also call DVC and ask their advice. The DVC CMs are very helpful and knowledgeable about peak times.

Hope this helps!

If I were using SSR points to book, I would book the treehouse. You may want to change at 7 months, but the THV would be the SSR accomodations that MAY not be available then, the 2 bedrooms most certainly would. It would be more points for the treehouse.

Our whole family from 7 to 67 loved our treehouse stays! I do not like the increased points, so I'm avoiding them for now. IF my family begs and pleads, I would book one again.

I would definitely book Treehouse at 11 mos. We often go President's Day and have had no problem getting our first choice resort at 7 months, so the SSR 2BR should definitely be available. I agree with PP - BLT would probably be a good bet. Also - you mentioned not being able to afford a Grand Villa. I'm not sure how much more the Treehouse Villas are now compared to a 2BR, but have you checked out the points for a GV at OKW? They are much cheaper than GV's at the other resorts. And I've had success booking them at 7 mos. Good luck!

THanks, everyone for the advice! Sounds like I should definitely start with a Treehouse at 11 months and then take some more time to evaluate what dear sis wants out of a vacation. You guys are awesome!

I agree with above posters book Treehouse at 11 mos, then if you want you can change to another resort at 7 mos.

Are you going to have a rental car ? A rental car is very handy at treehouse villas. The last time I stayed there, it was two bus transfers to every park, as the treehouses had special buses that ran on a special fuel, according to one of the bus drivers. We drove our rental care to every park except the MK,

What we loved about the treehouse we had was the large deck which we used to sit out and have several meals. We loved having three bedrooms, and the bunk beds which afforded more privacy. We also did less parks that trip and spent a lot of time at SSR pool and we pool hopped over to OKW, which was actually a shorter distance. It was a very relaxed layed back Disney vacation.

THV are awesome when you get back from a busy day at the park! I love the outdoor space, large decks and boat rides to DTD. I would not stay there if we did not have a car thats just us. I too would recommend BLT for the distance to MK if you can get it at 7 months and you would have 3 full bathrooms which is a plus! Good luck and have fun!

BTW we went presidents week every year for 17 years and although it is crowded we always made sure we were at the park 1st thing in the morning and by 2:00 PM (when it is the busiest) we were done with the park and back at our room/pool relaxing. I love going that week!
