What's the most cost effective way to get to the pier for DCL? Also, does it make sense to use points for 2 nights at SSR (i.e. before and after the cruise) or pay cash for a nice hotel nearby? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I know that Magical Express does bring you from the pier to SSR. I am assuming you can also take it from SSR to the pier. That being the case, I would recommend that as your transportation. As far as using your points for a 2 night stay, I guess I would ask if you will be needing those points for the future. If not, then I would use them up. If you are planning on going again in the near future, then maybe I would save them and use them for your next trip.

We have stayed at the Radisson at the Port. It is a very nice Hotel and only across the street and down maybe 1 mile. They offer free shuttle service to the pier and back. They also allow you to park your rental car at the hotel, while you are sailing.

On our most recent cruise, we were able to rent a full size car from Hertz for $47 each way including taxes & fees! Far less than any other option we could find. Each rental was for a 24 hour period. Hertz is very close to the cruise terminal and included complimentary transportation to/from the port. We used the AAA discount for the rental.

I agree with this approach. We did the same thing when we took a RCL cruise out of canaveral. Very convenient.
