SSR or AKV?

More than anything buy where you think you would want to stay the most.

With that being said, if I were to buy more points I would add on to SSR as opposed to AKV due to the fact that SSR is new construction rather than a refurbished hotel room. If memory serves both resorts are the furtherest distance from each other so location isn't necessarily an issue, in my opinion.

All that being said, buy where it appeals most...either resort will be beautiful and relaxing.

CURRENT AKV rooms will be conversions.

But there is an entirely new building/construction coming by the end of '09. The trade off to buying now is staying in the converted rooms, but buying later you're likely to pay more per point.

We have recently decided we want to get a DVC.. and for a while we were pretty sure we wanted AKV, but after spending sometime researching.. including these boards, we're not quite so sure anymore (not about DVC, we want that, just AKV). As new buyers we would be spending thousands more up front as well as higher yearly maint fees at AKV vs buying at SSR, especially in resale. However, we've never stayed at or even seen SSR, and we know that we love AKL. There just seems to be many pros and cons on both sides. Any advice for first timers?

You know until you have stayed at them all you will not really know what you like. I thought I would love BWV - I did not....I thought I would hate VWL - I loved it.

I own at SSR, VWL and BCV - never plan to stay at BCV because SSR and VWL work for me.

It really comes down to this - if you regularly reserve 1-7 months out it does not matter what is your home. If you are a nuerotic planner and you will be devastated if you cannot get the EXACT room you want at the EXACT time during a peak time then figure out where you want to stay and buy there.

Just to be clear...it's not just "neurotic planners" who book prior to the 7 month window. Some people have careers where a) there are just only certain times that you're allowed to travel and b) vacation requests need to be put in FAR in advance.

I say "Buy where you want to stay". In addition, looking at SSR and AKV, size wize, it would seem MUCH more likely to have availability on shorter notice (7 months and less) than AKV. AKV looks to be good sized too, but it would seem, between the two, the 11 months booking window would be more advantageous at AKV.
