Hello all,
New DVCer and my wife just booked our first trip, a family trip with our parents.
Staying at or home resort, SSR in a grand villa. AKV was not available for one of the nights we want.

We booked mid January hoping crowds are less and weather not too hot.

Not sure how weather is or how much of the resort we could enjoy. Any comments, thoughts and suggestions are greatly appreciated.
We are looking forward to it.
We look forward to making memories.

We stayed at SSR this past January 11-20, there were 6 of us in a 2BR and we had a great trip! The weather was great, temps ranged from high 60's to high 70's, so a sweatshirt or windbreaker kept us comfy each day. Some days we did wear shorts and t-shirts when is reached almost 80. We really had a great trip, hope you do too!:goodvibes

we stayed in ssr in a grand villa in february and loved it. i hope you enjoy your first trip there. i will try to find some pics. the weather was pretty mild most of the days but then woosh it got chilly so i remember my husband went to the gift shop and bought a ssr sweatshirt and i looked at the price tag. :sad2: told him to pack layers from home, but did he listen, no. i love that sweatshirt. it is so warm and toasty. now he teases me that i picked fun at him that day he bought it. we enjoyed swimming and did the surrey bike rental and loved taking the boat to DTD.

Thanks Diz.

My worry was it could be too cold. A sweatshirt/windbreaker is perfect.
With 6 a two bedroom was good?

Thx for reply.

Dvcterry - you guys did the pool in January?

I'm looking forward to the villa.

we used the pool everyday. took a midday break from parks. that one day was a bit too windy though, really breezy. so we used the hot tub instead and wore our clothes over our swimsuits. but it was still perfect weather. didn't rain or anything.

just for a night of downtime went to the community hall. we got a disney dvd to watch back in our room, made some popcorn, and relaxed.

since we are going back there in again this february we are thinking of maybe doing a movie or see la nouba or something else in DTD.

maybe a spa service, those are really nice too! ;)

I used our DVC for 26 days in January last year, I love to swim, but don't think I used the pool more than 5 times. Some of the time I was in Vero, where I used the hot tub a lot!

I like to bike ride, & love to go between WL & FW. I'll bet there are nice bike rides you could take around SSR.

Jan 10-13 is Disney Marathon Weekend. Will you be there for that?

January can be 80 degrees or 30 degrees. You really have to plan for both temperatures. We've been there and we wore several layers, gloves, hats. And we've also been there spending the day at Blizzard Beach and getting a sunburn.

We've been in November where I sat on the beach at Typhoon Lagoon in a sweatshirt and blanket while my son and husband swam.

D&B

We are planning Jan 17 to 20th... And going to add one more day to either end. So we will miss marathon.

We stayed in a Grand Villa at SSR in January 2010. We had a wonderful time, but it was freezing and we are from Minnesota! Winter jackets, hats and gloves kind of freezing. There is no way we could have used the pool. Many in our party used the hot tubs, but no pool.

Overlooking the weather, the trip was great because of the lower crowds. Very little waits for rides, up front for parades and shows!!

We were there in Jan 2009 and we had parkas on 5 out of 9 days. You really have to be prepared for a wide variety. The plus side is the crowds are generally lighter; the downside is rides can be off line for servicing. Suggest you check the DisBoards for the refurbishment schedule so you're not disappointed.

Have fun!

Thanks Diz.

I noticed your question about the 2 bedroom wasn't answered. A dedicated 2 bedroom will have a king size bed in the master, 2 queens in the second bedroom, and a pull out in the living room (I think a full).

Not sure how big your group is, but if it is only 6, you could go with the 2 bedroom and save a lot of points. Or use those points to stay for longer :thumbsup2

We were there this past January and my kids got to swim in the pool. January is really a nice time to come because the crowds are low and the temps are great. However, the weather can be unpredictable at times so just be prepared for either warm weather or colder weather. Definitely bring a sweatshirt just in case :goodvibes.

The sleeper sofa in the living room is queen sized. The studios have double sized sleeper sofas.

You really need to be prepared for either pleasant or cold weather. The "average" high temperature that time of year is upper 60s but you can get significant variances. As some have noted weather can be pleasant the whole time. However, you can get days where high is in 40s or low 50s and nights plunge to low 30s and even in the 20s and you can get a few or more of those in a row.

Thank you all.

We are a group of 6 adults and two children.
We are looking forward to it!

I am new to DisBoards but love the help and feedback.

And check out the ten day forecast on weather.com before you go. It should give you a hint of what to expect.

A two bedroom would sleep everyone in your party, but a grand villa will definitely be more comfortable and spacious. We love SSR! Be sure to check out the rec/craft room for the kids. They also roast marshmallows every night at 6:30.
