Day 4 - Castaway Cay Take II (aka Member Day)

This is a trip report for the special DVC SS Member Cruise held Feb. 2-6, 2003 on the Disney Wonder.

Cast: Me & DH (MarkRG). We are DINKS who love Disney. We've been DVC members since Jan. of 2000. This is our 4th DCL cruise (did 3-day Magic in Oct. '99, 7-day Eastern Magic in May '01, 4-day Wonder in May'02 and we have a 7-day Western Magic planned for 5/10/03).

Ok, this is it we are backing in to Castaway Cay right? I’ll finally get to look out my window and see the beach right? Wrong. We pulled in. Oh well!

Since I hadn’t felt well the night before I didn’t want to push it with a greasy breakfast. Instead what I really wanted was a nice cup of tea and not in a styrofoam cup. So off to Triton’s we went to breakfast. I’m so glad we did because after sat down and were served who did we see serving the next table but our server from our last cruise Josko – what a nice surprise. We chatted with him briefly on our way out.

Since we knew we weren’t going to swim we just wore shorts with our new blue Member Cruise t-shirts. We headed out to the Island and took a spot close in on the family beach. As we got to the beach we saw – beach balls – lots and lots of beach balls. It seemed that every chair grouping had one. They all the DVC logos on them. Cute! We grabbed ours!

Soon it was almost 10 am so we headed over to the boat beach for the photo shoot. Have you seen my DH? He’s in a blue shirt – ha ha ha. I really thought they were going to spell out DVC but they didn’t. Too many people I guess. Anyway the group shot took about 10-15 minutes waiting on a photographer that IMHO was a little too full of himself. We check the light, we load the film, just take the picture – you have tons of people waiting. Cool shot with the ship in the background. By this point I figured this was going to be our gift for the evening. We’ll see.

An hour or so on the beach and I was done – I needed a nap and the now getting crowded family beach (at least at this end) was not for me. I headed back to the ship and ran into Gail, John, Robin and David. I apologized to Gail and John who we were supposed to meet for the deck party I never made it to.

Mark came back a little after me and since the room wasn’t ready yet we went down to deck 4 to sit in those comfy blue lounges. Mark slept while I read and watched the banana boats go by. Mark woke up in time for us to watch them lift one of the lifeboats out of the water and secure it back in place. Not hungry for lunch we went back to the room. This time it was my turn to nap (hey I’m on vacation). There were plenty of things going on a Castaway Cay – especially for families and groups – but I just wanted a little nap.

Woke about 1:30 and decided to go see the 2pm show of Disney Dreams. This would give us more time this evening to do the packing. This is where you could really tell there weren’t a lot of kids on board. I think there couldn’t have been more than 50 people in the audience. Part of it, of course, was also the events they had going on shore. Great show as always. As we walked out we ran into Gail and John again. They were headed up to get something to eat with their tablemates and since Mark was in the mood for a wrap from scoops we joined them. Sorry I can’t remember their names, but they were a nice couple and we had an enjoyable lunch with them.

Skipped the Debarkation talk as we knew we could watch it on TV. Did a little bit of packing and then headed up for the Farewell Celebration. Not quite as crazy as sailaway on Sunday but we ran into a lot of the same people. So did we win those dues for a year? No <sigh> but did we have a good time and are we glad we came? YES!

Back at the room more packing – we got everything to fit! Off to dinner and then we do the final pack and put the luggage out. Walking through Shutters I see the picture of all of us on the island. Guess we aren’t getting that as the gift – too bad. So of course I had to buy it. Mark scanned it, blew it up and we found ourselves – yeah!

One last dinner and it was said to say good-bye. It was so nice to be able to chat with other DVC members. I am embarrassed to say I can’t remember all my table mates. I know there was Mark (not my Mark), Marcia, Sue, Dennis, John and John’s wife that also began with an M but for the life of me I can’t remember. They were all great and I’m glad we shared the nights we did with them.

Back to the room and we find another gift. A limited edition tea pot. Steamboat Willie. Beautiful but where am I go to pack it! We made it fit you better believe it.

Soon the bags were out, we were in bed and in the morning SS Member Cruise would be a memory. Sigh!

Glad you were feeling a little better and that everything fit in your suitcase...:D :D

Ps which Sue went on the Alaskan cruise...my dad is thing of taking my step mom when she is feeling better..

Kim,

Sue Holland (WDW1972) did an Alaskan Cruise on Holland American last year. She posted in my day 5 thread. If you e-mail her I'm sure she can give you a link to the photo album she did for the trip. The pictures were wonderful!

My email is wdw1972@aol.com

I was on the Amsterdam in Alaska last June - there are so many photos I put them in 2 separate albums (almost 100 each) on Ofoto.

Email me & I'll send you an invitation to the albums.

I can't wait to see the photo in the DVC newsletter! That must have been a sight to see. I think pictures look nicer if the Wonder/Magic pulls in forward instead of backing in.

Thanks for sharing your trip.
Tina :)

Tina,

Actually you can see the photo one of two ways. One way is on the DVC Member site - they have it now.

The 2nd, of course, is to go to this link DVC Group Photo as my DH posted a copy.

Glad you are enjoying the trip reports.

We couldn't believe they pulled in forward again, either! We too had always been on the starboard side, and thought that for once, being on the port side we would be able to see the island, but it was not to be.

I have to admit, though, that it does make for some pretty pictures with the ship pulled in forward. :)
