Squirrel vs. Crock Pot

I dropped the lid to mine over the 4th GG and it broke. Where can i get a new one? The co. it came from's website is under construction so no luck there.

I believe Old Time Pottery has lids, if you live near one.

I've also seen lids at stores in Outlet Malls, like Corning, Corelle (sp?) etc. These are probably casserole lids, but as long as you knew the diameter I think they would work.

I used a crock pot almost every day while at the fort last month and never had a problem. We sat it on the picnic table with nothing more than the lid on it.

Rog.....we do here in Missouri as well. My Grandma used to put 4 of em in a blue granite roaster with a couple of onions and let em simmer in the oven all day. Come supper time she'd fix some biscuits and make gravy. Man......that was some powerfull good eatin.

We've had critter stew in the crockpot before - a bunch of us just put in what ever we had - squirrel, rabbit, venison whatever and it was pretty good.

Are there raccoons in Florida? A squirrel probably couldn't lift the lid off a crock pot, but a raccoon could. Although, the heat might keep it away.

Raccoons can also lift plastic crates. Better use some heavy rocks on top.

I havent seen ANY coons at the fort though....kinda weird! I guess they are pretty good at disguising themselves as otters.

I love how this thread has meandered. You guys are a riot!

My sister and her family tent camped at the Fort probably about 10 years ago. At that time, a raccoon got into a tupperware container of fudge they had left outside the tent. Which is why she suggested to me that a crock pot would attract critters.

At any rate, I couldnt get my hands on a crate before leaving. So, I decided to risk it, and just plugged the crock pot in (unprotected) and left for MK Friday morning. We came back around 1:00 in the afternoon to swim in the pool and take a break from the crowd. I had started to cook some hot dogs on the campstove when a storm hit. We could hear thunder off in the distance. And I had anticipated some rain. What I had not anticipated however, was the absolute downpour and that my cheap WalMart First Up canopy would leak like a seive. We had to abandon ship, which meant unplugging the crock pot.

So, while no animals disturbed the crock pot. However, we ended up going back to MK and eating there instead.

Aside from the leaky canopy, I was well prepared thanks to this forum (although I didn't see any warnings about the attack frogs *shudders). When I get my pictures loaded, I'll post a full report.

This may be an off-the-wall question -- but, for those of you who leave a crock pot cooking outdoors, are you not concerned that a person will tamper with it? It seems to me that a person would do much more damage than an animal!

I think we need to add a few extra items to the "What to pack" list:
1. crate (to deter Super Squirrels)
2. oscillating fan
3. bungee cord
(with this combination, it sounds more like we're trying to catch a squirrel to cook in the crock pot- we'll also need a big stick to hold the crate up & maybe a piece of cheese for the trap)
4. extra flip flops (for protection from rabid frogs)

Hey Rog- I'm from NOLA too! I was eating squirrel at a friend's house in Marksville, LA & her aunt shrieked with joy (and envy) exclaiming, "You got the rib cage!" Lucky me!

So THAT's why I didn't see any squirrels while we were at The Fort.

hmmmmm I wouldn't worry about the squirrels. I would be worried about the Jackalopes. There as bad as the otters at the fort.
