We have lived here for about 3+ years. No problems. Lately, the floor has started to squeak in a few places. ?????????????????????? What causes this and how do I fix it? It's driving me CRAZY.

(especially, when I want to sneak in and get on the DIS boards.......now the floor squeaks and gives me away!) :confused3

This happened in a house we used to live in. My husband went in the crawlspace and saw where some of the nails.............ok, well I don't really remember what he saw, but I know he did something with a hammer and fixed the problem. :rotfl:

so if I just give my hammer and say "fix the problem" that should take care of it? :rotfl2:

I think you can put a spacer in under the floor josts? Oh, I can't remember. It happens after the house settles.

what kind of floor covering do you have, is it on a ground floor level, have you noticed any doors or windows not shutting or opening properly, is it just one spot or is it all over, how old a house..

there are numerous reasons for floors to squeek, sometimes they can be repaired from below by clinching nails , adding spacer atop joists, depends on the scope of the problem.

answer a few of the above and i'll try and help you narrow it down.

If you have hardwood floors it's an easy fix. Sprinkle baby powder on the floor and sweep it well all over the floor. Sweep up the excess and the squeak should be gone. The floor will be kinda slippery though for a few days.

I know when we built there were some squeaky places and I asked the builder to fix them. He said the floor was sound and to keep the squeaky places, that if an intruder would come in we could hear the intruder. So far no intruders, but I am familiar with the squeaks and feel that they are part of the house singing to me.

On an episode of This Old House they fixed a squeaky spot on a hardwood floor by using something called a snap-off screw. They sank this screw through the board into a floor joist and then snapped it off below the surface of the floor. Then they filled the little hole with putty so that it didn't show. Pretty neat!

baby powdder will sometimes temporarily stop a squek in older hardwood,,, qwill not work on laminate or new glue down woods as well.

wood floor
ground floor level
our house is about 9 years old

it could be settlement has shifted your foundation blocks, and it could be seperation between floor and subfloor, you could try checking the blocking, then drive wedge shims between floors and joist in squeeky spots.
