Spring Sports - Show Your Shots!!!

These first two are my 9 year old son. This is his 5th year playing, but his first year of actual kid pitch (the first 2 years were coach pitch & the last 2 years they used a pitching machine). He likes the kid pitch much better! I haven't been able to get any good pics of him catching yet, but they still have a few more weeks of play left.

The second two are my 7 year old nephew. This is his 3rd year playing. He still plays in the age group that uses the pitching machine and DS is teaching him to catch, so he's really excited to do that as well.

Well, track season is over. And I now have several hundred more pictures on my computer that look........ well........... nearly identical!

So the last couple of meets, I decided to play around a little. If you haven't been to a track meet lately, then just know that there's lots of time to play around with your camera!

My first attempt I won't even post. I brought the tripod and tried to use a longer shutter speed. Major flop. It just looked out of focus.

At the district meet this weekend, I tried to play around with panning. While not perfect, I did like a few of the shots, and can't wait to try it out for cross country in the fall!

Mine is the one in the last photo. He shaved a few seconds off and ended his sophomore year at 4:52 in the mile.

Great job on the panning! It almost looks like the Photoshop version I did for you about a year ago! Of course, it looks a lot more natural when you get the settings right in-camera, like you did.

It was that thread last year, and your photoshop version, that came to mind last week when I started getting frustrated with taking the same track shots over and over. I wish I had remembered it earlier to give me more time to practice. And it occurred to me last night that I probably should have turned off the image stabilization!

Great shots everyone!! I am enjoying this thread alot even though I have no pictures to post. I did spend 11 hours last Saturday shooting Lacrosse action and probably clicked off about 4000 shots. Unfortunately it was all for the company I work for doing youth sports photos and I had to turn in my memory card each hour for a new one. There were 74 teams playing on 16 fields and each of the three photographers there were shooting 2-3 games every hour. It was a blast and I am glad I am not resposible for editing all those shots.

I am glad to see this thread continuing! Our soccer season is already over. Probably because it is getting into the 90s every day here. In SWFL, Spring lasts about three weeks and Summer starts in late April...

Here's one of Dustin Pedroia rounding third. It was taken at the Rays-Red Sox game at Fenway when Dice-K spit the bit.

I shot with an 1980's era 70-210 FD zoom lens using an FD to EF adapter on my T1i.

I shot this photo of USAF Lt. Caroline White qualifying for the US Olympic team in this year's Boston Marathon.

Despite the hats and jackets on the spectators, it was springtime!

This panning looks cool. I like the feel of fast movent that it lends to the still photo. How is it done? is it a longer shutter speed while moving the camera?

Thanks! I used a long-ish shutter speed, I think around 1/40. You then have to move the camera with the subject. I have fairly unsteady hands, so I used the tripod with some of my shots, and a railing for the others, to sort of steady the camera while I pivoted it with the runner.

I can't believe I'm saying this...... but I wish track season wasn't over so I could try it again!

Taekwondo is really a year-round sport, but they were doing a demo outside on a beautiful spring day (it got up to 70 in NC 2 weekends ago - of course it is back down to 38 today!)...

Fun shots! Seeing these remind me of my spinning hook kick and ACL surgery that followed. Ouch.

Yeah - me too! I did the same thing, but with a roundhouse kick to the head of a guy 8 inches taller than me! Bye-bye ACL!

I have been taking tons of pics at my grandkids baseball and softball games. These are some of my favorites.

We live in Philadelphia so a Blue Heron is an unusual sight flying over the ball field

DGS is the catcher

He sometimes plays second base

I like this one because they were all looking for the foul ball which I managed to capture

DGD is playing travel ball for the first time. The uniform is a little too big

Not the greatest shot as far as focus but I got him crossing the plate ahead of the ball

I liked this one because I could see his eyes looking at first to hold the runner as he caught the ball

I have started using my A-300 exclusively and am really getting much better shots. Any suggestions to improve them are appreciated.
