I think the Pats made a big mistake with the rebuttal. My favorite analysis of it so far:

The Patriots released a 20,000-word tome in response to the Ted Wells report Thursday. It was actually funny. It wasn't meant to be funny. But it was hysterical.


The report was part Truther-ist (the only thing missing was a picture of Barack Obama's birth certificate), part serious, but mostly comical. Seriously, key parts of it were patently absurd, so absurd it led to a torrent of jokes on social media. The Patriots' response to the Deflategate report will give The Daily Show material for years to come.


The response's lack of weight belies its significance. It wasn't done just to rebut the NFL investigation's conclusions. It was a message. It was a hilarious, caps-locked message, a poor one, but a productive message nonetheless. It was a way for the team to continue to get party loyalists to believe it. The voluminousness of it gives the rebut a superficial density, and believers will grasp on to it, like a raft in a heavy seas.

Sounding like there may be a "deal" before any appeal is heard.

I would love to take a bet that it is not increased -in fact, I'll take double or nothing that they are decreased. If you think they are going to INCREASE the penalty, you either don't follow the NFL much or you are more delusional than you appear.

I don't follow the NFL much. Deflategate is just too fun of a story to ignore.

I saw a post on ESPN this morning that The Commish and Kraft are on speaking terms, so I don't know what will happen. I thought Goodell was going to use this situation to assert his independence and pander to other owners, but it doesn't look like that now.

No deal was made to reduce the penalties. They're accepting the penalties as-is.

However, the Players' Association is going to conduct its own appeal separate from the team.

I agree BUT I'm thinking Kraft and Goodell spoke on the elevator during the owners meetings this morning and came an agreement that "if this, then that"...

I interpret this as the Pats organization admitting that McNally deliberately deflated the balls. Do you agree or disagree? Would Kraft have accepted the punishment otherwise? More than the money, its two draft picks...

Agree on point one although I also think he "reluctantly accepted" to put an end to all this. I think they could have appealed to reduce the monetary fine and reduce the loss draft picks.

I also feel the two of them negotiated a side deal regarding Brady's suspension and his involvement (or lack thereof).

This entire thing has become such a circus, on both sides.

No it doesn't and that's because the league really couldn't give a crap. They know that "most" QB's do what they do despite a "rule" that the referees never bother to enforce. And, here we are.....

Glad to see Kraft come to his senses and do what he said he'd do before the report was released.

Do you think the Patriots want the NFL lurking around looking for every little violation? Better to accept and move on, rather than face deeper and continued scrutiny.

Note to Brady: Time to put on the big boy pants and bring closure to this whole mess.

I agree with this. I could be wrong, but I think this was part of a side deal to knock down Brady's suspension.
