Spokeo.com - Kinda Freaks me out that much info on me is available

There's a site called Spokeo.com that's a new online USA phone book w/personal information: everything from pics you've posted on FB or web, your approx credit score, home value, income, age, etc.

You can remove yourself by first searching for yourself on their site to find the URL of your page, then going to the Privacy button on the bottom of their page to remove yourself.

Before I go in and remove myself. I would like thoughts on this please.

I heard about spokeo.com a few months ago and checked it out. The information on there is far from accurate, at least where I and some of my relatives are concerned. Wrong marital status, children named that aren't in the family, wrong number of bedrooms and bathrooms in the house, etc. etc.

Nevertheless, I tried to remove myself from there. Every time I got to the step where you have to type in the code they show you, it wouldn't accept what I typed in as accurate. It said to check my e-mail for further instructions, but no instructions came.

Your post provides a good reminder for me to pursue this again.

It's an email collection spamming site. ALL of that information is found easily on the web. None of the information they had for us was accurate-other than our address and phone number-which is available on any phonebook site too. Once you "remove" your information, they have your email address, have fun with that .

not true ..I know a company who used spokeo to check on people for Insurance claims....... I searched spokeo using my email adress... not my name or phone number... and up popped my personal pictures... that had been posted on this site , not on facebook..... they had a lot of info that was correct.... did not like my personal pictures on there with my name etc....

Again, that information can be found by searching the web. You posted them HERE, thus they were on the web by your own doing. I think a lot of people, here and on other sites, would be amazed that a simple right click of the mouse will lead anyone to their photo sites

Again, that information can be found by searching the web. You posted them HERE, thus they were on the web by your own doing. I think a lot of people, here and on other sites, would be amazed that a simple right click of the mouse will lead anyone to their photo sites

yes but here i am semi "anonymous"....... spokeo listed my ip adresses..... what other sites I have blogged on..... etc etc etc........ most people here would not be able to figure out my name and address by my "njcarita" username.....

What I find odd is that when you try to remove yourself, it always comes up with an error, like you did not type in the verification letters properly, when I know I did. They make you give your e-mail address to take yourself off. Is that suspicious to anyone else?

i had no problem removing myself and my husband????

Go to your county tax website-probably the same picture there too.

The site is a joke.

They have my DEAD grandfather listed as alive and living with my parents (which he NEVER did).

My husband is listed as "gender unknown".

I'm not on there at all.

Besides, anyone who wants the info would have to pay for it.

I know, I looked up a bunch of people and none of them had correct information. Most addresses were correct, but not all. Most had incorrect information on marital status, house values, etc. If people really want to waste money looking up information on people, oh well.

Heck no! The info they have listed for free is wrong...why would I pay for more wrong information? I checked a cousin...they say she's married. She is not and never has been.

That's why I have an e-mail address that I use for any situation such as this, where spam may/will be generated. No big deal.

All it'd give me was address, who lives there and phone number without wanting me to pay. But that info was messed up. It said DH lived with his parents in the house that I bought before we were married!

I just pulled myself out and it was easy but no-one else in my family was on there... curious. They had a bunch of info wrong and my cell listed as my number, which makes me think some business somewhere sold my info illegally. I am very careful about who I give what info to so I can tell. For example, I have certain alias' I use for certain things that include initials or the first few letters in a name and my birthdate and income are never ever correct. It makes me harder to pin down for data mining, also I always lie unless I am legally obligated to be truthful, if the question is inappropriate I will give an equally inappropriate answer LOL.

you can get that info on MANY sites! If you go to zillow you can find out what you and all your neighbors pay in property taxes and see pics of the houses.

It doesn't seem like anything different than Zaba or any of the other search engines. So much of our info is public...there's nothing on there FREE that was revealing.
