Splitting a car rental

Anyone ever split their rental into back-to-backs to bring the price down? Is it doable? Is it worth the hassle to go back to MCO and swap out? Do you get to keep the same car, or do you have to take another? It feels weird to not have a car booked as I'm waiting for rates to drop for October. I'm considering using the KLM code for the 1st half of our stay which would incur a drop fee on the OW rental if I book the whole 2 weeks, and then swapping it for an Entertainment Book rental that would be more for the whole 2 weeks, but doesn't have the drop fee.....Ideas?

Yes, wait for the travel date to be closer. The prices will probably drop with in a month of your departure, which will allow you to avoid the hassels you just described above.

Thanks for the input. We have done so well with National Exec the last several rentals, it just feels so strange to be waiting with no car rented at all. It would be a disaster if prices went up more...:scared1: I'll take your advice and wait it out, thanks!

You can always book now and keep checking and modifying.

I did it once. We were starting a trip in CO and ending in NM. We had a rate of $500 and brought it down to $350 by making the first reservation end the first night we were in NM. We loved our first car and were dismayed to see no full size in the lot. We couldn't keep our car, they had driven it off. We needed the full size for our luggage and didn't want a larger car because we were going to do a ton of driving in NM and wanted to save on gas.

It ended up working out because Alamo let us pick a full size from the National lot but I learned that you can be penny wise and pound foolish. Would I do it again? I saved $150 so yes. But only if it won't interfere with my trip, I have the time and a back-up plan if what I need is not available.

I would not worry about not finding a full size car at either Alamo or National we are the largest location in the world here in Orlando (so I am told). Exec. aisle always and I do mean always, has full size cars (cause you pay for a mid and are guaranteed a full size or better). Enterprise, Alamo and National are the same company, we share cars and we accomodate our customers whenever possible.
