Split stays

This will be my 5th trip and in the past we have stayed in one spot but always an Epcot resort. ( Epcot is our favorite) During our 4th trip we did the Spirit of Aloha dinner and I fell in love with the Polynesian. Our trip in 2017 will be our first split stay. Part of the trip at Poly , focused on MK and AK and part of trip at BCV focused on Epcot and HS. We are excited to experience a different resort but still balance that with time at our favorite. Our kids will be 19, 11, and 9.

I've seen a lot of folks posting about splitting their trip between multiple resorts. What is the main reason to do this? I like the idea of getting to experience different resorts but the idea of moving to a different hotel in the middle of a trip (with 3 kids and all their stuff) seems exhausting to me. Am I missing something? Is there another reason to do this? Not hating on anyone, just wondering. :-)
I wouldn't do it if I had three very young kids and all that luggage. But folks do it for lots of reasons, including:
Economy....wanting just a night or two at a Deluxe, but wanting to stay within a budget.
Location.....wanting to be near MK a couple nights, followed by an Epcot area resort, especially for the convenience of a mid day break.
Experience..... Just to sample different resorts, and/or test a resort for a possible longer future stay.
Availability..... Perhaps their first choice of resort did not have openings for all days of their stay.
Late or Early Flight...... Some folks have to make a choice to either stay at their departure city airport hotel before a very early flight, or leave in the afternoon the day earlier and spend that hotel money on a Disney Value Resort. That way they wake up already where they want to be instead of taking that 5am flight. This is especially true if their airport is a long distance from their home. Or some folks have a very late flight and don't get to their resort till midnight and don't want to waste money on their deluxe room the first night and plan to crash and sleep at a Value, before moving the next day.
Last winter I stayed at AoA one night last minute in order to fly out before a huge blizzard. Then, as planned, AKL-1nt, Grand Floridian-2nts, Saratoga -5nts, and Disney's Vero Beach-5nts. Just me and my carryon rolling bag! 5 resorts in two weeks! I stayed three nights solo, the rest with friends. I would do it again anytime.

Yay! Sounds wonderful! And your kids are old enough to help pack up and move their own stuff. Have a great time!

We do it to try different places, and because we like it better than staying in one room for a long time. Instead of staying at one place for 12 nights, we're doing 4 this trip. Our kids are 13 and 15 and we travel pretty light, so it's easy for us.

Thank you all for the info!! I never thought about the issues with DVC points or having availability issues with the different resorts. Splitting the stay seems like a creative way to get the most for your time/money in a lot cases. I'm not sure if we're ready for it just yet but I will definitely consider it on some future trips after hearing all of your ideas!

We booked our first split stay to take advantage of an Orbitz discount. The maximum discount was $150 per booking, so rather than book one six night stay and save $150, I booked two three night stays and saved $300. We are splitting between Yacht and Boardwalk, so we get to try both resorts. One of my bucket list items is to stay at all the resorts, so this helped me check off two in one trip.
