Hopefully we'll be closed pretty soon on a DVC membership and I was wondering about splitting stays. Is it a real hassle to split a stay and are there reasons to do it besides availability? Just wondering, Thanks.
Split stays can be a hassle and staying at 2 resorts because you want to is a main reason.
For the Epcot or DHS part of your vacation stay at BCV or BWV. For the MK portion, stay at VWL of BLT. As a member, you don't have to rush around anymore, going to 1 or 2 parks per vacation is fine. You will be vacationing at WDW every year for years to come.
We enjoy the split stay and have done it for most of our DVC trips. We stay a few nights at BWV or BCV and then move to BLT. This allows us to walk to 3 of the 4 parks.
So far, it has not been a big deal. I pack so that we have all things in one bag for the first part and the other stuff in a 2nd bag. We also rent a car for a few days to make the move day easier.
Of course, we have only been DVC members for a few years and our plans could change down the line but for now, it works well for us!
We love to do split stays but we also take 10 day trips down there so we have plenty of time to split. If we were only down there for 3 or 4 days I might not want to go through the hassle of re-packing everything. We are trying to stay at every resort on property. So far we have stayed at all the values, all the moderates, and about half of the delux resorts. It's kind of a neat change to change resorts half way through, you get a new kind of atmosphere and a new pool for the kids to play in.

Split stays can be good and bad, expecially if you're going to be at WDW for several days. On the positive side, if you want to try out several resorts quickly, it's an easy way to do it. Also, I feel like each DVC resort gives you a different experience, so you can really break up the "feel" of your vacation by doing a split stay.
On the flip side, I personally don't care for them. I like to get there, unpack and settle in for our stay. We always reserve 1 or 2 bedroom units, so we're talking about unpacking and packing up not only what we bring, but groceries as well. Lastly, I kind of feel like I'm losing a part of 2 days - the day I check in, and the day I transfer (you have to check out, and then check in at the other resort). If/when we do it again, I will plan a park or water park day on the transfer day so we don't feel like we're wasting a day.
