Split Stay........?

Hey All,
Just wondering, I always read alot about Split stays and was curious to know why people do it? Is it because you want to check out different resorts or a resort that you originally wanted wasnt available?!? And last but not least is it worth moving all your stuff from one hotel to another?!?
I dont think this is a bad idea at all but just wondering why!?!?! If there are some good enough reasons I might do it too!

Haven't done it yet, but experiencing two new resorts is the reason we (DH and I) would. In my dream, we'll spend 5 nights at the Yacht Club Resort and then 5 nights at the Animal Kingdom Resort.

On our last few WDW vacations, we've stayed at the Beach Club. Love the ambiance (sounds classy, doesn't it ) and especially that it's within walking distance of Epcot. Would love to try the Yacht Club so we could still stay close to Epcot. And I dearly love visiting the Animal Kingdom Resort, so it would be great to be able to combine stays at both in one trip. Thought that, with 5 nights at each, we might not feel as rushed at either of them. 'Course, this is out in the future. It's gonna take awhile to save up the $ for a 10-night stay....sigh.

Experiencing different resorts, convenience, & it's got something to do with prices for us too.

On our last trip we started at ASMO - the holiday rates for moderates were more than we wanted to spend - on January 1st the rates changed and we moved over to POFQ, where we paid less than we would have if we'd stayed at ASMO.
This summer there's no AP rate at the Poly. So, we don't want to spend the whole week there. We'll do 4 nights at the Poly then move over to Boardwalk at AP rate.


We save a little $, get to experience two resorts instead of 1, get to enjoy both the monorail and the walk/boat to Epcot & MGM. We'll only need to take buses for AK.

Also there are several restaurants we wanted to try that are in the boardwalk/epcot area and we can walk to them from BWI instead of having to take 2 buses from another resort or pay for a cab.

To us it's worth the small inconvenience of having to switch resorts, but it really isn't much trouble at all. Put your luggage in the cab, check in, go to the parks & when you come back your stuff's in your room.
I won't let Disney transfer my stuff again though it took forever!

I love split stays....

My next is....YC 1st night....AP discount...then.
BCV for 3 nights....then switching to pofq for free dining...

I need to try all the resorts...
so split stays....gets me there faster

I mostly live out of my suitcase though....so packing is easy
I also usually cab from one resort to the next so
that I can have my stuff....and get there quick
this time moving from yacht to beachclub...will be very simple...

I did do 1week at SSR in a 1 BR.....it was heavenly to stay the
whole week.....we really relaxed....BUT I did miss seeing 2 new resorts...

If you book a package with dining and tickets....
easiest way to try a split stay would be to stay
your last 2 nights at a new resort....
your park passes would still be good....
DDP expires on midnight of checkout day....still good at resort #2
if you have credits...
You only have to pay for food 1 or 2 days..

The last 2 years we've done split stays and enjoyed them thoroughly. The first year we did it (2005) was at AKL and then Poly. It was like 2 trips wrapped into one for us. We did have our car for transporting our stuff, so we just took care of it. It was the 4 of us (me, dh and our 2 dd's 6 and 15 months) we had very little issues with moving and we had a lot of stuff in tow including our pack n play for our youngest. Then we enjoyed it so much we did it again last year (2006) - BWI and CR (our fav). This was AWESOME!! Being so close to MGM & Epcot for the first part of the trip and then being so close to MK, we LOVED it. We walked to all 3 of the parks multiple times during our stay.

Our trip in 3 weeks is going to be a shorter stay (only 5 nights instead of our usual 8 or 9 night stay) so we will not be splitting our stay this time unfortunately. We like to say a minimum of 4 nights at one place and then move to the next resort. We are looking forward to our trip though seeing as we've been wanting to stay at CSR for years now and finally it's worked out.

We are planning to return again in December for our longer stay and when we do we will most likely do another split stay at that time. I can't imagine us not at this point!

This September we are doing 3 nights at AS Sports for the free DDP and then we are switching to OKW for 5 nights on our DVC points. I went for 14 nights at CSR Jan 2002. One of my biggest regrets was not switching to another resort mid stay for a change of pace.

Another regret of the same trip was that we did not accept the upgrade to AKL that was offered for $20 more per night. I STUPIDLY did this because I had never seen AKL, I had never stayed at a Deluxe, and they weren't offering Savannah view. That was the trip that started my Disney vacation planning obsession. I would never make that mistake again, but I still kick myself everytime I think about it.

I hate split stays, but we always end up doing them . The advantage is that you can "experience" two or more different resorts. The disadvantage is that you have to pack up and move. That usually takes a couple hours out of the night before the move and then a couple of hours going to the new resort and checking in. Then, you may be "homeless" for a while if your room is not ready. That happens quite often at DVC resorts and we have to wait until 4:00 PM or later for our room. We once had to wait until after 8:00 PM for our room at OKW!

You can have the "luggage fairies" move your bags which makes it a little easier.
