Split stay + dining credits

We are doing a split stay and have the dining plan for the second reservation only. On the day we check out of hotel 1, will we be able to start using dining credits before we check into hotel 2 that afternoon? Or do we need to go over to hotel 2 to actually check in before we can use dining credits?
