The points have to be within their banking window. So, if you have an August Use Year, have a trip scheduled for July, and cancel the trip in May, you cannot bank the points and they still expire July 31.

Ohh ok I get it. So if you had a trip planned in March and had to cancel as long as you did it within 30 days you would still get the points back and be able to bank? So that’s why use year is important depending on when you tend to go to wdw?

correct. If we are staying with the August UY example, you would need to bank by March 31. Any points banked (from prior year) or borrowed (from subsequent year) would still expire July 31 as neither set of points would be eligible to be banked.
