Splenda made me sick....

Splenda doesn't make me feel sick, or give me headaches, but it does give me.......gas.....

Not so much if I just use one packet for a cup of coffee, but if I have an ice cream bar or some other food item that contains Splenda, watch out! :teeth: I finally started using "Gas X" to curb that problem though, and it's only once a week or so, so not that often. And if I'm going to eat something with Splenda in it, I try to make sure it's a day where I'm not going anywhere!!

I've been wanting to make cookies or a cake using Splenda, but not relishing the idea of the...*whispering*....gas.....problem getting even worse!!

Stevia might be a better option for you. You usually have to buy it at health food stores. It's an herb. I don't think it's completely calorie-free, but it's lower in calories than sugar.
The liquid is calorie free and so is the pure powder. Sweet Leaf's Sevia plus has inulin fiber (spelling?) to add some bulk, make it easier to disolve and the cut the bitterness a bit. It does add a a few calories/carb, but I believe they are all fiber carbs. I'm not sure where the origional box is right now.I have all 3 on hand and use for different things. I keep stevia Plus packets when out to eat, or traveling. I use the pure powder in hot liquid items and the liquid in items it would be hard to desolve the powder in. It does have a slight bitter taste, but I've found it goes away if I use only a tiny bit. If You want to make something really sweet I'd go with the Stevia Plus since it is less bitter.

Chattaholic, your problem with foods sweetened with Splenda may not be the SPlenda, but may be the sugar alchohols. If you look on the ingredients and see Mailitol, that will most likely be the culprit. Many many many people have "intestinal upset" if they consume too much malitol.

As far as substituting splenda for sugar in recipies, since it is so much sweeter, you can't measure it by weight. SUpposedly a cup is equal to a cup, volume wise. I think there is someone onthe DIS who used it to cook for her daughter, I'll ask her and she may be able to PM you some info.
