Splash Mtn / Song of the South needed

A few years ago I was able to purchase a copy of SONG OF THE SOUTH on VHS tape at a small shop in Old Town, Kississimee. While the tape ran OK on my VHS player, it was of very poor quality. But it was a complete copy, and I enjoyed watching it.

I await the time when Disney will rerelease the movie, but only if it is complete, with no scenes cut.

Many fine parts of our American heritage have been destroyed by so called "political correctness," and I'm sure that's why the movie has not been rereleased so far. A real shame, methinks.

Also, if anyone is interested in reading the Uncle Remus/Tar Baby story, it was published in a set of books. I think they were called the Wonderful World of Disney books and they came in a set of 4. An Ebay search usually turns up a picture. A local library might have a copy. My brother and I grew up with these books and I enjoyed reading the stories to my kids before our Disney trip so they would be familiar with the characters in Splash Mountain. I believe it is the blue spined book that has B'rer Rabbit and friends.

A friend of mine in New Zealand sent me a copy...it cost $20 to have it transferred from PAL format, but it was worth it! This was the first movie my 65 year old Dad saw as a child, so I gave it to him on his 60th birthday.

Try your local library--maybe they can help you. My public library did not have a copy of the Song of the South DVD, but they were able to do an out of network loan and I have a copy on my desk right now. I enjoyed watching it, but there are several dated concepts/attitudes which would need to be discussed with kids, not just the tar baby.

I bought 2 copies (dvds) from ebay within the last year, one for me and one for my dad, from 2 different sellers. My dvd worked great, no problems. However, the copy I sent to my dad did not fair as well. A very poor copy I guess and he couldn't even finish the movie. So a bit of a gamble but the movie can be found, and I'm glad I have a good copy.

Splash mountian is not in chronological order as it appears in the film. Also some key scenes have been altered. IN addition the ride creates and actualy Laughing place when in reality a laughing place is just a pretend place.

There appear to be a number available on ebay. As for the bittorrent feed, keep in mind that bittorrent may not respect copyright laws. For that matter, I suspect that many of the videotapes available on ebay may be copies as well.

I have a copy of a copy of the video from Japan, which has subtitles during the songs, but all the audio is the original English. Unfortunately the tape is almost done for, because it's about 15 years old and starting to break down. but my daughter did get to see it at least, before she rides Splash Mountain. :)

If you are OK with just reading the stories that are in the animated parts, check your library's catalog for the author Joel Chandler Harris. The stories were originally published as a column in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution in the 1870's, and were initially published in collected form in 1880 in a volume entitled, "Uncle Remus."

Harris never claimed to have created the stories, but to have heard them told by plantation workers he knew in his youth. They were originally told in Gullah. They have been republished many many times under quite a few varying titles, but you can always find them by searching on Harris' name. Amazon.com sells several editions.
