Spirited Ball...anyone else find it disappointing?

We attended the Spirited Ball last night and were really disappointed in the evening overall. For one, it was a $145 per person Food and Winefest event, and so we expected there to be good food and wine. Instead they offered us watered down Barcardi drinks in plastic martini glasses. They did have a very cool way to serve the watered down Barcardi drinks though...through chutes in a bar that was totally carved out of ice. Unfortunately, that bar sat empty most of the evening because well, they were watered down drinks and the type that you have maybe one of (if that).

There was one very small additional bar which was manned most of the evening by one or two bartenders at most (mostly it was one) and it was an open bar. However, they were offering one cabernet, and it was Kendall Jackson. I can buy Kendall Jackson at my 7-11. We had a couple of glasses of wine, and had to wait 5-10 minutes in line each time we got one.

As for the food, it was served at five stations throughout the room. While the food was pretty good, it certainly wasn't the quality that we were expecting. They had a roasted butternut squash station, which was the best dish of the evening. Again, we waited about ten minutes in line to get our soup. They had a stuffed pork loin with cheddar macaroni and cheese. The pork was dry...this was more like buffet food. There was a venison stew served with mashed potatoes. Stew? We paid $145 per person for stew? The same stew that they're serving out at the New Zealand booth for $3.50? There was a risotto cake with duck confit that was nice.

They had warm apple crepes for dessert. I had one that was pretty good, but the rest of the little cakes and offerings were clearly frozen...sort of like a Costco Dessert.

The entertainment......they sort of brought a character to life out each of the paintings in the room. They had an iron worker guy, a rosie the riveter, a pilgrim, a sea captain....on and on. They sort of walked around posing all evening. The servers were all in 1700 period costume. And they had two couples come out and dance a couple of choreographed waltzes. Later they pulled people out on the dance floor. There were only a few couples who wandered out on the dance floor all night, and they clearly had taken ballroom dancing lessons. So, they were the only ones who could dance to the music that they played.

The seating...small cocktail table with six chairs at a table. When we first entered the room we figured that they'd keep us in this room for awhile and then we'd move to another room where we'd be seated at an actual table for dinner. That never happened....

Overall, we really felt that it could have been (should have been) a whole lot better. We're not sure where they spent the money on this evening. The fog machine and the talent couldn't have been *that* much. The ice bar was probably supplied by Bacardi. I don't know, we left thinking that we could have gone to Victoria and Alberts for what we paid.....well, we were just disappointed.

Sorry
you had a disappointing experience. Thanks for the review

Did you email your thoughts about it to Disney?

No. But I will today. I have to figure out who to send it to. Anyone here have any ideas on that?

We had a young guy come up to us as we exited the International gateway who asked us what we thought of the event. We were carrying the masks that they gave us so it was obvious we attended. We told him we were disappointed. He told us that he and his five friends stayed for twenty minutes and left (and got a full refund). I guess we stayed because we thought for sure that we'd be moving into another room for a high quality sit down meal. When the Town Crier guy announced that dinner was served...at the stations around the room, we realized that what we were seeing was it.

Very overpriced for what we got....

I'm sorry you were so disappointed in this event. I'm glad you are letting Disney know what you thought. I don't know who you should contact - maybe someone else will have an idea.

dvcgirl -- I have to second what you wrote. We didn't know what to expect. Actually, the evening was rather nice -- but seriously overpriced at $145 per person. The food was tasty, the entertainment pleasant and the music we thought was lovely.

But, it seemed like it was essentially a corporate event slightly re-tooled for the F&W Festival. I suspect Disney has done it many times for various corporations.

For a F&W Festival event, it was disappointing, to say the least. I had 1/2 of one specialty drink. I agree it was so watered down, I didn't finish it. Neither DH nor I had any interest in the wine offerings. The food, while tasty, was not worth $145.

We wouldn't do this event again.

Well said lyncruiser....it did feel like a corporate event. A Bacardi sponsered corporate event. The big letdown of course was the quality of the food and wine. Definitely not up to snuff for a Food and Wine Event. I can even see throwing the same party over at the Haunted Mansion....for the huge park fans. We're fans of the parks, but at the Food and Wine Festival events, the focus has always been on the food and wine. Here, it definitely was not.

Well, I'm glad to know we weren't the only one disappointed in this event! There was so much potential!! ...but it just didn't live up to the expectations or the hefty price tag.

Regarding where to direct comments,

Ms. Nora Carey is the person at Disney in charge of coordinating F&WF events and she was the person who oversaw the development of this event. Personally, I'm directing my comments to her via the usual Guest Communications PO Box.

I admit to rather enjoying the thing - it got better once I found the martinis. I've got mouthwash stronger than the Bacardi things.

I am not disappointed that it wasn't a sitdown meal with servers - I liked wandering - but I don't think the whole thing was really up to the price.

My wife and I attended this and were also disappointed...the bacardi drinks were lame (really watered down). It seems that there were a lot of corporate sponsors at F&W this year pushing their wares on us. The lunch and learn we went to had martini & rossi vermouth in every dish (not something we would ever consider using).

We enjoyed it. We went into it knowing it could go either way. I was pleasantly surprised with enjoying all the food being a picky eater. I'm not a drinker but enjoyed what was offered, I was happy that the drinks weren't overpowering. The couple that joined us at our table were wonderful so we had enjoyable company to pass the night with, wouldn't mind spending more time with them. They did dance, we did not. We ladies decided on shoes that stayed on and possibly (for me at least for confidence) lessons hey it's a good excuse to get DH to try ballroom ;) If it's offered again we'll certainly do it, sadly I don't think we'll make it back for an Oct trip till 2007. My 3 Disney 2005 trips were already planned before we flew down for this last one.

Could they improve, yes as everything can probably be improved. Nothing and no one is ever perfect but if it were life would be boring :-D Can't wait to see if they do repeat it and how they improve it.

Hmm...I guess I made the right decision. I was thinking of doing Spirited Ball, but decided on doing Party for the Senses instead.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I'm sorry you didn't have a great time. I was curious about the ball. I guess I didn't miss anything.
