We are really looking forward to it, but have seen few positive reviews....is it really that bad? Honest opinions appreciated....

We went two years ago and enjoyed it. The food is pretty good, and the show is fun (especially the fire dancer!). The show is a little hokey, but the dancing and singing is good. I say give it a try!

We saw the show about a year ago. The show was FANTASTIC! I think everyone has to see it once.

The service was also great!

The food wasn't that great. It's served family style and I remember that the meat on the ribs was stuck to the bone. I'm a rib lover and for it to be good, it has to be tender and fall off the bone.

Go for the show - the kids will be amazed if they've never been to Hawaii. It's as close to Hawaii as they'll get!

We went last year after having been to many luau's in Hawaii, so it was difficult for us to view it as a luau. It's definitely entertaining, but very cheesy....I agree with the previous poster, everyone should try it at least once. The food was ok and the show was cute.

Try it!

Another positive vote -- a wonderful, fun experience if you are going to enjoy yourself and have fun. If you are going to critically compare it to (1) the best-available dining at WDW or (2) to a Broadway or "real" Hawaiian/island ceremonial dance show, you're likely to be disappointed. We went with open minds and determined to enjoy ourselves (the way we go into everything at WDW!) and are glad we went. Hope it works out the same for you!

The food was average, the show is not very good except for the fire dancer (he was awesome). My kids were bored and kept asking when it would be over. Do the Hoop de doo instead. It is a much better show and a fun time for all ages. It is a must do for us every trip, the kids insist on it. They never want to do the luau again.

We had a great time in January, and will go again next January. If I HAD to choose between the Luau and HOOP I'd choose HOOP, but the Luau was fun. The fire dancer was super, and the kids got to go up and do the hula on stage. Food was OK; I'd recommend it too!

We just went a few days ago.

We thought the food and show were great. We have a 7 yr old daughter who loves shows and dance, so it was very interesting to her. I suspect that in general girls will like the show more than boys, but most adults should enjoy it.

When you are seated the salad and bread are waiting. The bread is yummy as is the salad dressing. There is a brief opening for the show, a little hokey, but demonstrating a modernized view of Ohana (family). Beer and wine are included in the price.

Then the platter of fried rice, vegetables, chicken and ribs comes out. All were good. You can ask for extras of anything.

The show resumes, with a series of traditional costume and dance demonstrations from all over Polynesia. The fire dancer is the finale.

Be warned that the late show gets out at 10:20. The Magic Kingdom was open late for a P&P Party so we were able to monorail over and get a bus back to the Boardwalk. If MK had closed at 8pm as other nights, it would have been a late late night taking a bus to DTD and then back to Boardwalk.. actually we would have sprung for a taxi I think.

Also, be careful booking a late show during a free dining period! Our show was at risk of being canceled as scattered storms passed all day and evening. If it were canceled, we'd be stuck at 8:30pm trying to find a decent meal and no restaurants had openings anywhere nearby. It would have been burgers and fries at Captain Hooks... a very unsatisfying alternative!

Ha ha I just noticed I've been tagged. good one, whoever did it!

I asked this exact question a couple of weeks ago, and I've decided that we'll skip this. However, I'm choosing to skip this because of our specific group of people; 2 young adults (DSs who will be 20 and 17 at the time of the trip), DH and I, and our Aunt(75) who has been to luaus in Hawaii. I just think it could possibly be a disappointment to her, and I'm not sure my DSs would really enjoy it. We're going to do the Keys to the Kingdom tour instead, for about the same cost. Also, we're only there for 6 days so I don't want to waste a dining opportunity on something that I'm not sure of, when there are so many excellent restaurants to go to. :)

I hope you have a great time if you go! If we had small children, and if our aunt hadn't already been to luaus in Hawaii, we'd probably give it a try :)

Abysmal food and medicore at best entertainment - a complete disappointment from my recollection of it as a kid. I'd rather spend the money/credits anywhere else. Sorry, just my honest opinion.

I would go and give it a try. While you may like the luau show others may dislike it. You have to try it once to make up your mind. We enjoyed last september as the food is plentiful, just what my 2 sons loves- lots of food. The show is a little corny but the fire dancer was awesome. Even the girl dancers are full of muscles- man!!

We were there last december and we loved it! I am of the belief that there's nothing too corny in the world, and I was Brady Bunchin' it big time!

The food was ok, not especially memorable but not bad, the entertainment was great, and sucking booze out of monkey heads was the BEST!

We still all have ours!

We LOVE the luau! We go every year. Great food and great entertainment. We also love dressing up in Hawaiian themed clothes! I even have one of the songs as my ring tone.

This will be our third Spirit of Aloha visit. My girls love it! Actually, many of the dancers are still the same from the first time we went. Of course I've never been to Hawaii to see a real luau. I enjoy the second part of the show that showcases the different dances of the islands. The all male dance...hubba hubba...lol. Then my girls think that the fire dancer is David from Lilo and Stitch, so they always ask to go see David.

One thing I found out this year is it is not worth it to use 2 credit for dining to see it. You get better seating choices if you pay out of pocket..which is what we ended up doing. Front row center!

NOT TRUE! We used ddp last year and used our two credits and were front row, center.

In fact, we probably wouldn't have gone if it weren't for the credits...

I have been to several of the previous Lua's at the Poly, as far back as I can remember. I think the latest rendition is not as good as those in the past. But at least they make an effort to change it around so it's not the same old thing. I was happy we went to it last year Nov. 06 the food was fine, but this year we are doing the hoop-dee at least it's inside & air cond. the food has been great the previous three times I've gone, and I like the show at the hoop-dee better, then the current Lua show. But next time we go we will prolly do the Lua again. Not sure if the Lua show offers beer with the show, but it comes with the show at the hoop-dee.
As for seating, I found out this year calling to book the hoop-dee that they have three different tiers of seating and the DDP credits will not get you into tier 1 seating which is supposed to be front and center, so we paid out of pocket. Now we better be front & center or I will be upset... ;)
