It doesn't matter which dining plan you have, it is 2 TS credits, you can only use DDP for Cat 2 or Cat 3 and you cannot upgrade to Cat 1.

Thank you - when you book does it give you your 'seat'? Or first come first serve day of?

From what I understand, its based upon order of when reservation was booked. One year I booked right at 180 days in Tier 1 and when I showed up I was a good ways back in the line (Half Way) but our table was front row center of the stage, best seats in house. I later heard from someone that they typically assign based upon order of when it was booked if possible. Don't know if they still do that but I LOVED it!

OK, here is the info . . .
1) You can ONLY book Cat-2 or Cat-3 if using a DDP.
. . . Cat-1 is more expensive
. . . WDW wants to make as much cash/profit as possible for dinner shows (and, of course, other activities)
. . . therefore, "giving away" Cat-1 seats to DDP is not as profitable as selling them OOP
2) You CANNOT upgrade to Cat-1 by adding cash to a DDP Coupon.
. . . you can get Cat-1 if you pay OOP
. . . you might also luck-out if the show is not crowded and the SEATER moves you to Cat-1
3) ALL seats are assigned 8-days prior to show date.
. . . the table number is on your printed ticket (available 7-days prior to the show date)
. . . you cannot ask for or know the table/seat number until they are assigned
. . . so, regardless, what the phone person might say, you cannot get/ask a specific table/seat
4) If you reserve on the SAME SHOW DATE, the box office person can give you an exact table number (because others are already assigned).

NOTE:
The seating is assigned just like the assignments at HDDR.

First-come-first-assigned.
They are assigned by the time/date you make the ressie.

I frequently assign tables at HDDR, so I do know the process.

We used the regular DDP for ours and reserved at 180 (+5, I think) for category 2. Personally I think our table (table in the very middle of the platform seating area) was better than some of the tables in category 1. Being at the railing on the platform we had no one blocking our view.
It was a very fun show and kept our 6 year old captivated the entire time! Enjoy!

1) OK.
2) However, OUR REVIEW . . .
.
Our Ratings of Luau: (*rev 03/12/2016*)
. . . food price value: C ("D" if using if DDP)
. . . food quality: C
. . . food quantity per serving: A
. . . food prep speed: B
. . . food selection: C
. . . seating quantity: B
. . . seating comfort: C
. . . eatery atmosphere: B
. . . eatery convenience: C
. . . staff friendliness: B
. . . staff attentiveness: B
. . . character interaction: C (performance)
.
NOTE1: The Luau plays upon the traditional Hawaiian or Pacific luau. However, the "play" is silly at best and sub-par when compared to any authentic luau. If you never plan upon attending a true luau, then this would suffice. If you have done a real luau or will in the future, leave this unattended. As for the food: salad was OK - bread was OK - chicken sub-average - ribs were good - rice and veggies were flavorless. Overall, not worth the cash price or 2-TS coupons. As for DDP, strictly financially speaking, it is better to pay OOP than use two DDP-TD credits. If spending the money for Luau, you would be more pleased at the Hoop-Dee-Do-Review in Fort Wilderness.
.
NOTE2: Having seen luaus in Hawaii, my daughter actually fell asleep at the Disney luau.

My daughter saw a fire breather and fire juggler sticks (I'm sure there's a formal name for this but no idea what it's called but hopefully you got the idea) and was awestriken. Hoop dee do if I remember correctly from reviews is more a comedy play/show - correct? In which case most jokes go over my daughters head at light speed lol

I was nervous for Spirit of the Aloha based on reviews online but we loved it.
I have never been to a real luau and probably won't for many years. I realize this is not authentic but that didn't take away from our enjoyment. Everyone from 6 year old DS to my parents enjoyed the show and food.
The story line is cheesy (though it mainly happens during the beginning when appetizers and main course is being eaten) but if your daughter likes Beach Movie/High School Musical type stuff she will probably enjoy it :) the dialogue reminded me of Hannah Montana show stuff. They save the fire knife dance for the end but it was really good! Side note, make sure to catch Festival of the Lion King as there is a fire dancer in that as well.
