My wife and i want to bring a single carry on and it meets the 22 x 18 dim, but its 2 inches too tall. If the carry on can be smushed down, will they allow it or will they make me fluff it out?

It's Spirit, they make money off of all fees. Don't count on allowing "smushing"

Spirit does size checks by having you place carry-on and personal item in a box specific to their dimensions listed on the website. If your item fits in the box you are fine. If it won't fit into the box - you are screwed and Spirit will hit you with a BIG nasty fee. I have taken a personal item that is bigger than allowed but not overpacked so it will fit into the box.

Hope it helps!

Doesn't a carry on that needs the overhead cost as much, or more, than a checked bag?

Depends on how much $$$$ you are willing to depart with as to if you want to chance it. At the gate if it does not fit you will be hit will the $100 at gate fee.

Carry-On Bag
$26 $35 $36 $45 $50 $100
First Checked Bag
$21 $30 $31 $40 $45 $100

They just started flying out of dulles. I've been watching reports. The latest report I saw was that everyone that had carryon had to line up and get their bags measured. Yes carryon cost more than checked bags.
