Spirit Airlines and Car Seat

According to Spirit's site, there is no charge for Child Car Seats, and that they are to be a "carry-on". My question is this, does that car seat than have to be used in the airplane seat, or is it stored away.

I hope this makes sense. It's our first time flying with a child (2 turning 3 YO DD on this trip).

You can check your car seat for no fee on Spirit, same as strollers.
