Spirit air

I am considering using these guys for a quick weekend trip next month. They are less expensive and I don't need to carry much but the reports of cancelled or late flights does concern me. Other airlines are just so ridiculously expensive right now!

They seem to charge not only baggage and carryon fees but also booking and passenger usage fees?

We use Spirit all the time, as we like their direct flights. We just flew last week to/from Detroit to Ft. Lauderdale with no complaints. In fact, for both flights, Spirit departed and arrived early. My brother had the same experience with them last month to/from Orlando. On our departing trip we had pre-printed our boarding passes and on the way back decided to print at airport. We used the kiosk at the airport and weren't charged anything, so no complaints. If you follow their rules, they aren't bad to deal with. That said, I wouldn't want too long of a flight, as their comfort level could be better.

I did. That's how I found these other mysterious fees. They do add up. :headache:

I notice you are from the Frisco area. I too fly out of DFW. I flew Spirit to Orlando for the first time this past May, then flew them again for our Sept 1st-8th WDW trip. All four flights were fine. In fact, we arrived at MCO a few minutes early both times and also arrived back in Dallas a little early also. Now a few months before my May trip, my flight down to MCO got changed by several hours and the trip home changed by a little less than an hour, so I lost most of my first day down there and just a little of my last day. The Sept trip never did change more than a few minutes though, so was fine. Reading reviews about how crowded the seats were, I was a little concerned, so paid for the 'Big Front Seats' for the May trip. After looking at the other seats though, I decided they weren't that bad, so purchased regular seats in like Rows 5 or 6 for the Sept trip. They were fine and did not seem any smaller than seats I've had on Air Tran or American. If you go in knowing what your final fees are, Spirit is fine. Yes, I knew to carry my own drinks and snacks on and that I had to pay for my carry on and seat fee, but even with all the fees, Spirit was still ALOT cheaper than American, Delta, or Southwest for the times I was going (like $148.00 plus fees, compared to over $400.00 with all the other carriers that fly out of DFW or Dallas Lovefield). Again I flew Spirit for both my May and Sept trips and didn't have a problem either trip. I would definitely fly them if the price was right. For our upcoming Oct/Nov WDW trip we are flying Delta, but only because I caught them on sale late one night for $198.00 r/t. However, the Delta flight has layovers in Atlanta going down there and Memphis coming home, whereas the Spirit flights would have been direct/nonstop.

As far as being charged to print boarding passes as the airport: We had guest services at AKL try to print our boarding passes. They printed my mom's with no problem, but for some reason had a problem printing mine. Finally a manager type at AKL went into the back and "pulled some magic" as he called it and finally someway scanned me a boarding pass, but it was just a single one, not two on one page like my mom's. He said it should work though, since it had a bar code. When we checked our bag at the airport, I showed the Spirit GA the boarding passes and she said she did not know why mine printed out so funny, but I really needed the part the gate agent tears off, so she'd just print me another one. I was not charged anything and they were very, very nice.

Good luck!! In terms of the actual flight, we've never had a bad one with Spirit. Some of our smoothest flights have been on Spirit. That being said, cross your fingers, toes and pray nothing goes wrong with your flights in terms of delays or cancellations. We flew out of ACY in December. Received a call the next day that our flight home had been "downgraded" and we needed to call Spirit asap. We did and could barely understand the rep on the other end as the service center is literally in India. Our only options were to either leave 2 days early (not happening on a short trip) or 2 days later (not in the budget). After insisting on speaking to a manager I was told that department was closed for the day. Called again and was able to get a flight same day we were originally scheduled to leave just at 5am instead of 7pm. The kicker was that we had a 6 hour layover in Ft. Lauderdale. :confused3 That was rough enough but then I had to pay additional fees! I fought since they cancelled my flight and I had already paid for choosing seats tying to explain that we were traveling with our 2 children, one of whom is on the Autism spectrum. Was I supposed to let them sit with strangers? I was told that because it was considered a second flight, I had to pay.

Anyway, we were offered "free" RT tickets for our inconvenience. The only problem is that they had to be booked within 30 days. Guess what? The flight schedule was only up for the few months (wasn't sure we could swing 2 vacations in 3 months) after our original flight so when I called and asked if they could keep our vouchers active until the next schedule was up, they said no and we lost the "free" tickets which were going to cost me another few hundred dollars once you added the taxes and fees.

Hopefully you will have a great flight and no reason to need customer service. :goodvibes

Wow, the previous two posts are so different. It sounds like it might be a matter of luck.

PS. Hello Dallas area neighbor! :)

I/we have flown Spirit out of ACY many times, and will be doing so again in Dec. We usually go visit my mom so we ship our clothes and I pack food which is a big help. My main reason for flying Spirit is that it flies out of
ACY which is so easy for us to get to, and since it's a small airport, so easy to navigate! We will only have to pay for ds's baseball bag. But to fly out the week before Christmas, I got a great deal so off we go.
I can't recall flights being late or changed on us, but they fly out of ACY 2 or 3x a day, the same times every day, so maybe that routine just works. :confused3

we flew Spirit Sept 13 out of Latrobe to Orlando and returned the 21st. I would have no problem flying them again. I love Latrobe airport, its small so very easy to get thru.

Our flights both ways ran a few min early and arrived early. I didn't think the seats were that uncomfortable and my husband is 5'11 and son is 6'1'' and neither of them had a problem either. We did not get the big seats we had seats in row 6. We did take our own snacks and drinks. As far as luggage goes (we had 2 adults, sons 17, 9, 5, 3) we had no problem packing almost everything in our personal bags (they are free and the size of a small gym bag) We took only 1 suitcase. I like only paying for what i need/use.

Maybe we were lucky with no problems this time but there are problems with all airlines. Some want the convience of paying for everything whether they use it or not some look to save money by only paying for what they need. Our flights were 128.00 round trip add only the cost of 1 suitcase we saved a lot flying spirit. Also with flying out of Latrobe we were able to get non stop flights and didn't have to pay to park.

DON'T FLY SPIRIT!!!!!

Very long story short, they will not assist you if your flight is delayed or canceled.
- I booked them for a flight to myrtle beach
- they cancelled the flight for maintenance reasons
- they could not rebook me until 3 days after I was scheduled to return home!
- they had zero options to re- book on another airline
- my only options were to refund my flight or wait 6 days until they could fly me down. Both scenarios cancelled my vacation.
- poor weather had nothing to do with the cancellation
- I had to book a same day flight on us air for 5 times the cost as my original flight b/c spirit airline refused to do anything to fulfill my flight

I CAN'T SAY IT ENOUGH! DON'T FLY SPIRIT!!!!!

I can honestly say that we actually like Spirit Air. We have flown with them from Detroit over 100 flights and have never had a problem. I think our flight has only been late once because of snow here in MI and we were only an hour delayed.

A lot of people complain that they are being nickeled and dimed for everything but I sure don't mind. We never pay for seats and make sure our bags are under 40 lbs. We always carry on a small bag that will fit under the seat and take a snack from home. I always check in online 24 hours before the flight and print our boarding passes. Spirit is almost always way cheaper than any other airlines at least out of Detroit. I would actually recommend them to anyone.
