Spin-off Thread: How many port stops have you missed while cruising......

We missed the Cayman Islands on one cruise due to waves crashing over the pier. Once, we missed Tortola due to work needing to be done on the engines or something, so we went to Puerto Rico instead (they announced that as soon as we boarded). Once we had Cozumel cancelled before we sailed due to Hurricane Wilma (which had passed through a couple of weeks earlier damaging the pier) so we were informed a week ahead of time that we were to go to the Bahamas instead, but when we boarded we were told that we were going to Costa Maya instead. Almost didn't make it to Castaway Cay once, but just ended up docking late.

None of it bothered me. We'd been to Grand Cayman several times already and had no plans to disembark. I wasn't enthused about Tortola in any case, and we had a great tour at the Bacardi distillery in Puerto Rico instead. We had a great tour in Costa Maya and have been to Cozumel a couple of times since then. I've been to Castaway Cay so many times we don't bother to get off any more. We just consider it to be a part of cruising and roll with it.

What’s a “high wind” day for purposes of cancellation? It’s projected to be 12-19 MPH winds with a high of 24 H on our CC day next weekend.

20+ knot winds kept us off CC. It's not just the winds, though, but also their direction. It's easier to get on the pier when the winds are blowing in any direction except directly toward the pier. Given the channel to the pier is very narrow, and the sail of the ship (area above the waterline) is very large, mix in the tide and there's the recipe for either a late docking at CC or no docking at all.

We missed Grand Cayman once because we had to return to Cozumel due to a medical emergency onboard.

We missed St. Maarten once due to having to re-route around a tropical storm. The only other time I was supposed to go to St Maarten, while we did make it there, i was quarantined to my room with the flu.

While not missing it entirely, we once got to Castaway Cay around 1pm (IIRC they allowed us to stay on the island until about 6pm). Again, due to a medical emergency and a detour to Grand Turk.

Nine DCL cruises, zero missed ports. The only time we had an itinerary change, DCL called us in advance to let us know there was an entire itinerary change (the cruise was supposed to make a stop in Turkey many years ago) and allowed us to cancel the cruise for a full refund (we were in a concierge stateroom, so wouldn't have gotten a refund otherwise).

It's not just the speed of the winds, it's also the direction of the winds (as PP noted). It's also the current, speed and direction. So you can't just look at the wind speed and determine if you'll be able to dock at CC or not; there's a lot of factors that go into it.

Good to know - what’s the sub-optimal direction of the winds? As it looks now it’s 13-18 SE

I don't know. PP mentioned any way but directly at the pier, but I can't speak to that personally.

Honestly, I wouldn't worry about it and just see what happens the day of. Again, it's a variety of factors so impossible to predict. They will do their absolute best to dock there.
