DH is training for a major bike ride and is wondering if the spin cycles in the Fitness Center have clips for the pedals? If so, are they road bike clips or mountain bike clips?

May sound crazy but ....he's trying to decide what shoes to bring on our July 24th cruise!

:yay:

I would love to know that answer for the Wonder. I am planning on bringing my SPD shoes anyway because I have a 38 mile shore excursion bike ride planned. I am riding a century in Self so am also planning to use the spin bikes. Most I've been on have an SPD clear on one side of the pedal ands flat for tennis shoes on the other. It is more rare to find any road style clears, especially given the wide variety out there.

When I was on the Magic last year their bikes had SPD clips on the bikes, so I'm going to assume the Dream has the same. I plan on bringing my spin shoes in October.

Oh this is good info. :) I will pack my shoes for my cruises this and next November.

Hopefully some still have cages because after all the years of spinning I still have not convinced myself to but the shoes.

I don't know about the ones on the ship, but all the spin bikes I've used have cages on one side and SPD clips on the other - so you should be fine.

Wow, you should really bite the bullet and buy a pair. I felt they made a huge difference in my workouts. You can pull up more and really work those thigh muscles.

Hi! My husband is a hardcore road cyclist and he used the spin cycles on our Dream cruise this past March, as he was heavily into training for the season. I asked him for his input (must advise I didn't tell him he would be posted on the DIS!)

"They have spd pedals, and they are good bikes. Advice for a good cycling workout - do it on your own, the instructors were brutal. If one still chooses to do a class, make sure to sign up very early, and show up early for the class - they had some screw-ups on the number of people signing up versus number of bikes."

I remember he was able to go early in the morning so he could be on a bike for well over an hour - I think he did 2 hours+ one day. Yup, that's my guy. And that was a light workout. He is thrilled to be leaving in a few days for France to cycle some sections of the Tour de France with other hard core fans. He can't wait to climb Alpe d'Huez several hours before the pros!

Have a great cruise!

OMG! That is my DH's dream! Have fun twinmum's DH.

After happily presenting DH with all of your prompt answers, he asked me to check in again....just to make sure. He has run into confusion with local cycling folks here in Austin re: clips.

Are the bike clips for mountain bikes or road bikes? Apparently, there are two different kinds with one being larger than the other.

Who knew?! I just hear him clicking on the floor when he is on his way out of the house to meet up with the shop rides. I didn't know he had 2 different sets of those shoes.

(I'm learning so much new lingo :rolleyes1)

Anybody know what time and how often the spin classes are offered on the Dream? I have a 5 day Dream cruise coming up and definitely plan to spend some time in the gym. Thanks!!

There are several different types of clips so I understand his concern.

While that link might just make things more confusing to someone who isn't familiar, one thing you will note is that Shimano has both a road SPD (called SPD-LT) and a mountain bike SPD cleat. They are totally and completely different. There are also different types of Mountain Bike cleats (referred to in the article as MTB).

When most people refer to SPD cleats, myself included, we are talking about MTB SPD cleats. Those are the style that are most common for spin bikes. If he is going to pack shoes, he should pack MTB SPD.

Thank you, thank you, cyclenut! He mentioned Shimano so I really appreciate the link and the explanation.

I'll let him know and if he does not have those particular shoes, he still has time to buy some. Come to find out - he only had one of those pairs. Can't remember which ones though.

:thumbsup2
