Spiders at the Fort

Okay so I am scared out of my shorts when it comes to spiders I am a suck them up with the vacuum or swat them with a fly swatter kind of girl! Just wondering if I need to look out for any specific spiders, that are dangerous for me and my four lovelies. (My husband can fend for himself!!) I have never been to Florida so I don't know if they have the same kind as we do in Canada! Thanks for any input!!!

I hate them too just killed two black widows in my work shed scared the S... out of me.

Not really...unless you plan on rompin' in the woods. Otherwise, mostly just you common, harmless everyday spiders around the site. Of course, there is always that one spider the size of a small child...just kiddin'. I would not worry too much about them. Mosquito's would be a different story though.

I feel your pain! I am absolutely positively terrified of roaches!!!! Luckily I don't see them too often. However, last month, we were camping at the beach and a ginormous "r" (I don't even like to say the name) flew over my head and I just about had a stroke! That nasty thing flew into the 14,000 pound camper and rocked it back and forth! It was awful. I cried.

Here are a few things to worry /look for at the Fort.

Spiders, but the fire-ants do a good job of keep'n down the spiders. Roaches, nothing can stop them in Florida ! Snakes,,but if you are fast enough, I've heard they are delicious. Alligators,,most Fort folk think they are real, but I think they are Disney animatronics,.
But the real problem with pests at the Fort are those stink'n terrorist beer steal'n OTTERS !!I'm tell'n ya now,, keep a eye on yer beer !!

Since I will be staying offsite this year, beer and dinner left cooking in outdoor crockpots will be relatively safe.

Hi! Also comming from Canada I was ,probably just like you i think, very scared, not knowing what to expect. I was very scared to go to the campground and to find myself surrounded by snakes and all sorts of bugs that i was not used to. When we finally got to Fort Wilderness, i was very happy to find out just cute little lizzards, rabits, armadillos and birds. I am not saying there are no bugs or snakes at the Fort but....i was lucky not to see any and not to find anything scary to me. Planning our trip, i hoped that i could get a hotel room because i was affraid of snakes and things like that. But when we discovered the Fort, i was so very happy that i got to experience it, i would not change my trip to the fort for anything now!!!! I wish you a very magical trip!

Spiders don't bother me but my daughter is absolutely terrified of them. We've been bringing her here to the Fort since she was 8 years old. She is now 22. The only time she was actually confronted with her fears was when out with her younger brother in a canoe. They went down a canal that they should not have gone down (as in, not cleared) and hit a low branch. The branch dropped its "inhabitants" on the canoe. Webs full of banana spiders (I think that is what those huge, harmless spiders are). My husband and I could hear her screaming and her brother laughing but we didn't know why until they returned to dock. We were at our campsite so she was pretty loud. She sounded like some frankenstein or other monster had appeared. She was fine.
She still laughs about it and looks forward to coming again and again and has even gone for a couple more canoe rides. I don't really know if there are poisoness spiders here in Florida (none where I live back home either) but I do know from travelling about that spiders will sometimes nest in the electrical boxes or under picnic tables. We've seen black widows in those locations in other places, but never in Disney. The only snakes I've seen here are big black ones---non-venomess, a king snake I think. I have seen a small gator in the lake. Most common critters--armadillo, rabbits, butterflies, rabbits, birds, frogs, fish and those little lizards, ducks and very resourcful squirrels. We have seen the otters in the lake here at the Fort and some over at Downtown Disney as well.
Don't worry about the critters...if you leave them alone, they will leave you alone.

because i hate sand and grit in my camper i (on my first FW camping trip) left our shoes outside the camper door. (under the awning, so they would not get wet if it rained)......a nice big hairy spider did take up overnight residence in my shoe.

KEEP YOUR SHOES INSIDE!!!!

other than that you should be fine. really, i haven't seen more than that one over the years.

A lesson I learned in the jungle of Central America - always shake out your boots/shoes and clothing before you put it on. Better yet, suspend your boots by their laces on a clothesline overnight and shake them out before you put them on anyway.

I would really watch out for snakes. There have been many sighting of snakes at the camp grounds and the resorts over the years.

All the years that I've been going to ther Fort (many times) I have only seen one snake,,now that ain't to say others haven't seen them,,but I only once.
They help to keep down the rodent population,,
and I've heard they are pretty tasty.

Well, those snakes are doing a pretty lousy job since there are two very large mice and two oversized chipmunks running around the place.

Now I'm confused by two things, your name, "scrapple",,is that as in scrappy or as in the food product scrapple ? Cause I do enjoy scrapple,,mmmmmmmm.

And,are camel spiders a type of spider or a type of camel ?
