SPF shirt? Umbrellas?

Hello Experienced DISers,

Please tell me if this is a good/bad idea. My hubby and I purchased long slv, light weight, SPF 30 shirts to wear over tank tops (instead of having using sunscreen). What do you think?

Also, do you suggest taking an umbrella (esp. MGM) to offer respite from the sun while standing in lines for show (or sitting waiting for the show to begin). Of course we'll put down the umbrellas when the show starts.

Last, but not least, are visors good, or should we really get hats (I hate having hat head).

Oops, one more... Already read that Coppertone Sport continuous spray is the way to go, however will it do okay on the plane (air pressure)?

THANK YOU very much! We're leaving in less than a month!!!!

:woohoo:

I burn to a crisp in just a few minutes of sun, so I can relate! I wear a white ball cap, spf 30 or higher sun screen, and stand in the shade when I can. I might have to look into the SPF 30 shirts. I've thought about an umbrella (mainly for rain as ponchos are so hot), but I don't know if I'd want to carry it all day. Don't forget to put sunscreen on your ears if you're not wearing a wide brimmed hat!

Have you seen Rit Sun Guard? Its from the makers of Rit Dye. You add it to a load of laundry and its supposed to increase SPF of normal clothing from 5 to 30. I haven't tried it yet. I just ordered a few packets online. I think the sun shirts over the tank tops is a great idea.

Am leaving in a few days, and taking (to combat heat and sun) small folding umbrellas, lots of sunscreen, visors and hats (to have a choice -- visors are cooler), mini-fans, spray misters, bandanas to wear wet around neck, Bodyglide (anti-chafing and anti-blister stuff from running store -- haven't used it yet, but have seen several recommendations for it), moleskin, bandaids, and probably more. I don't travel light -- I use an umbrella stroller and a backpack that I can leave in the stroller (sometimes in a locker). Umbrellas are also handy when it rains, along with the small dollar store ponchos.
I can't imagine wearing anything long-sleeved in the heat of Orlando, or a second layer -- hope that works out well for you. You'll still need sunscreen for everywhere else. The spray stuff will probably be fine in the plane (haven't ever had trouble with any aerosols on planes -- altho I think they may be on the list of things some airlines prefer you don't pack).

In approximate order to the questions you asked:

I would think that sunscreen is cooler than adding another layer of clothes to prevent sunburn.

Umbrella's probably aren't a good idea when standing in a queue - too may other people nearby, some of whom will be at eye-level of your umbrella.

Hats with a wide brim are the best if its sun exposure you are worried about. Visors only protect your face.

Don't forget your feet if you are wearing sandals. One year, forgot to put sunscreen on the feet and had sun poisoning. Ouch!

I'm in my 30's and I never wear a hat at all , any kind. Last September it was so sunny and hot I needed something so I bought a Disney fisherman style hat and wear that and if I get hat head oh well at least my face and head aren't gonna burn and ruin part of my vacation.

I much prefer wearing the ultra lightweight clothing, that is sunprotective and evaporates water more quickly than cotton , to smearing greasy, sticky, stinging sunscreen over my skin!

Then with a sun hat for head, i need only put sunscreen on my face and back of hands.

Yes it does work very well in WDW.

Sunprecautions.com has many options but is expensive.

Just got back. Used sunscreen, hat with a top and an umbrella. The umbrella is handy while walking around in the sun and in case of the daily shower which we had. Hat protection is more useful then a visor and can be clipped onto your bag for rides. I would skip the extra layer of clothing it's just too hot. 90's Go with a polo short sleeve shirt put the collar up and sunscreen. Don't forget a gel neckwap.
