Speeding ticket

OP, my husband got one in August. We were on 45, coming back from Starkville headed back to Brandon. He was going 72 in a 55 zone. Ticket was 186.00, and he did have to go to traffic school one night. That cost 65.00. Since that was his first ticket, the points will be waived since he completed the "waste of time" class.

PS Some states it is against the law to use a radar detector in your car. Instead, just watch the speed limits...

Radar detectors are illegal in Virginia and many other states/jurisdictions.

Actually you are not correct in the many part.
No it is not many.....in the lower 48 US states, it is two...just two.

Virginia and DC, thats it......

I have a radar detector cause I know of some local communities have speed traps and WILL ticket you for just 1 mph over the limit if they feel like it. I have never known any car to have an accurate speedo.

I dont advocate reckless speed or street racing, most I have ever gone was maybe 15 over and that was on a 3 lane highway, that had little traffic and conditions of the weather and pavement allowed for that. I also have had high performance driving schools so I am quite capable of handling the car at those speeds.

appeal it, if you can!! (i don't know how this works in other states)

i got my first ticket EVER a few months ago, appealed it, and got it thrown out, no problems. It literally was a longer wait to be seen by the judge than it was to have her roll her eyes at me and tell me to not do it again, lol.

It was my first ever ticket in 6 years of driving, so they were happy to send me on my merry way.

Ah yes...reckless driving charges in Virginia. Do you know that they STAY on your record for several years - as if they were a felony, even IF it drops off of your insurance? ...

Radar detectors are illegal in Virginia and many other states/jurisdictions. ...

agnes!

Not correct, ok fine. Two, just two.

Around here "DC and Virginia" would qualify as 'many other jurisdictions' kwim? All I was trying to say is don't assume you can or can't use a radar detector...check out the laws of the cities/counties/states you're traveling through. If you're caught with a radar detector in your car in the state of Virginia (even if it's in the trunk you can get in trouble according to a local news report some years back)?... even though you're from out-of-state, the fine/ticket will be painful.

For me, it's somewhat the same as using a cell-phone while driving...some jurisdisctions it's ok, others it is NOT (like in DC, where you can get a hefty fine/ticket for using a cell-phone while driving without a hands-free device).

agnes!

PS: slow down. There's a reason for speed limits and the higher fines are because lower fines aren't deterring people.

Sorry - but speed limit enforcement is used solely to raise money. (same with red light cameras)

That is why when I was going to the Smoky Mtns last fall I planned the absolutley shortest route possible through Virginia. When passing through it, the detector was stored completely away and the holder removed from the windshield and let someone else drive.

um, it's not on the ticket how much it costs along with the options for driving school etc?

That will not work if the LEO is not keeping the radar on ...they norm turn it off and on to keep people from using them. They wait until they have you and THEN they turn it on.I know here they have a little remote they hold and turn it off and on...with the hand held type it turns on when they push the button so a radar detector will not help you.

I respectfully disagree that speeding tickets are given solely for revenue enhancement. Local jurisdictions receive very, very little money from speeding tickets. My son, who has just finished his second year on the street, will tell you that he has handled murders, gunshots to the face, suicides and stabbings, but nothing compares to what he has seen happen to the human body in a car crash. The higher the speed, the worse the injuries and the mess.

Don't want a ticket? Don't speed. The life you save may be your own:thumbsup2

I got one a few months ago, doing 60 mph in a 45 mph zone. The worst part is they set up a speed trap about once a month in that area. I was on the way to work and just zoning out. Looked up and there she was waving me over. Thankfully, she cut me a break on the speed. So the ticket was only $120 and no points. I think it helped that I admitted guilt and didn't argue with her.

I still remember my first, and only, ticket from years ago. I was living in Madison,MS at the time and I was in high school. I was going 53 in a 30 zone. It was 65.00 way back then, there is no telling how much it would be now.

There is a highway that runs through our small little town between B'ham & Auburn, and it is a major speed trap. The speed limit is 45 through here and they will pull you over for going 2mph over.

um, it's not on the ticket how much it costs along with the options for driving school etc?

The price of my ticket was not listed on the ticket itself. I had to call the courthouse to find out how much it would be. The officer told me about going to court and he actually said the cost of the fine would be higher but I could lose the points.

Thanks for all the replys. I was doing 70mph, but I did not see or really look for a speed limit sign. I really thought I was in a 65mph zone. Its a 3 hour drive back up there so 6 hours on the road, and about $60 in gas to go back up there and get home. Not to mention a day off from work. I hope I don't have to go to a class, and I have never heard about points. I'll call tomorrow and decide what I'll do. I will post up tomorrow late.

I can't imagine you not getting points. Call your insurance company and find out if your insurance will increase with the amount of points you will get, find out how many points you will get for going 25 over the limit, and if there are any state surcharges.

Don't even try to hide the ticket from your DH - your mailbox will soon be brimming with lawyer letters!

My husband got his first ticket in Novemeber on the border of NC and VA. It switches from 60 to 70 right there and my husband was speeding up for the change. Well he got caught 2 miles from the border...soo close to escape lol

Anyways he was really close because he was going 75 in a 60 and in the state of VA going 20 miles over you automatically can get reckless driving in addition to speeding.

His ticket was $120 which I paid the day before our anniversary. I told him happy anniversary and put the receipt in the card;)

My DH got pulled over on the VA border, he was heading to GA and right along the VA/NC border got pulled over. Also was consider reckless driving and was told he had to go to court, couldn't just pay the fine. He received mailings from several lawyers wanting to help him in court. Normally we wouldn't go that route but since we live in MD, he hired a lawyer. The lawyer handled everything and didn't really help my DH out at all. We were out the fine for the ticket (about 200+ dollars), the lawyer cost (another 500 dollars) and he still had to do a online class, and also received pts. The only thing the lawyer helped with was my DH didn't have to take the day to go to court. Lawyer didn't help him one bit, just took our money. I remind him all the time now not to speed in VA. He has a radal detector but they are against the law to use in VA.

My husband was headed to GA too lol. Those boys and their lead feet.;)

We were very lucky he didn't receive the reckless driving charge in addition to the speeding. I couldn't believe the number of advertisements we received after the ticket. I just paid it online and it said nothing about points on his license. I called the insurance company this month and they said they received nothing about it so I'm hoping we are all good now.

Agreed.

First stepdad worked at his dad's towing company in coastal CA as a kid/teen/young adult. He saw horrible things from car accidents. And they were generally caused by speeding and running red lights, etc. He saw enough gore that he put seatbelts in my mom's classic car, a '55 Chevy, that was grandfathered and didn't actually require belts. And he was a collector at heart; but it was worth "marring" the classic car to him.

... I have never heard about points.

I can't imagine you not getting points.

FWIW, not all states operate on a points system. Washington state doesn't.

A site I found, a privately-run site that is not official, states:

Many states have a point system to penalize bad drivers. Depending on the severity of their infraction, each violation racks up points on their driving record. After accumulating so many points, these drivers risk high insurance premiums and even the suspension or loss of their driving privileges. However, in Mississippi, no such point system exists.

Thank you for the information bumbershoot :thumbsup2 (Mississippi, no such point system exists.) I'm going to call in the morning to find out more. Thanks again.

Last year my neice got two with in 45 minutes apart, and guess where she was going? To pick up her pay cheque.
