I will be driving I95 from the Balto area to Disney. That is till I get to I4. Anyway. I plan to set my cruise control on the posted speed limit number and just go. My question is, is there anywhere I need to especially watch where the limit takes a change? I remember traveling along the Pa turnpike where the speed limit would suddenly drop down to 45. If you missed that sign you could be in for a hefty ticket. The only ticket money in my vacation budget is my park tickets. ;)

Other than the DC Beltway, I would imagine that the most likely spots for a sharp drop in the posted speed limit would be construction zones. If you have AAA, you can do a TripTik of your route that will warn you of construction zones (and any likely delays cuased by them), and you can do them on line these days.

Others will surely opine of other specific locations to watch out for.

Good luck!

If you go straight through the Richmond Va area it drops to 55 in the city limits,if you take 275 around it you're better off. Parts of NC and SC are 70mph, but that will drop near cities. We never drive south of Myrtle Beach, so that's all I can attest to.

As far as I can remember, there are no "speed traps" (as such) on any portion of I-95 from Baltimore down thru Florida.

dont forget about the Police car in the grass with no one in it?
what do you get if you speed by that, an imaginary ticket?

is that in Georgia or is it FLA?
or maybe S. Car.

its probably a great idea, makes me check my speed everytime.
(i dont really speed, just a few over maybe)

Howdy fellow Marylander!

If I recall, there are only two places south of DC where the speed limit drops below 65, and that's downtown Richmond and downtown Jacksonvile. And as Bill said, you can avoid the slow parts through Richmond by taking I-275. CORRECTION - That's I-295!

Once you're in southern VA, the speed tends to fluctuate between 65 and 70. It's been a few years since I drove the whole way, but I do believe there are a few places where the speed goes up to 75 for brief periods, though I could be mistaken.

My strategy when making the drive is to set my cruise control at about 9mph above the speed limit. I also stay in the left lane at that speed, but I pay close attention to my mirrors so I won't be surprised when someone comes up behind me and passes.

More than 10mph over the limit tends to attract LEO attention, but staying at the posted speed limit tends to make the loonies fly past you fast enough for their compression wave to blow you off the road.

Just a heads up in Virginia. South of Richmond its wide open for 60 miles or so. Lots of folks "go with the flow" which can be around 80 mph. Don't do it!

In Virginia any speed over 80 mph or 20 over the limit is considered reckless driving. That also means a mandatory court appearance at a later date.

Limit your speed to 5 mph max over the limit - the cops will have plenty of others to chase.

P.S. - Many Southern states, including Virginia, have "move over" laws. Simply stated, you must move over a lane for a stopped emergency vehicle or slow to 35 mph if you can't change lanes.

Good news - gas is dropping at many Virginia stations. Paid $3.19 today.

Is that 275 or 295? or are they the same road. Severaal people have mentioned the 275 bypass around Richmond. The reason I ask is I can't find 275 on the map. 295 goes around Richmond just like 695 goes around Baltimore.

I know what you mean about the loonies flying past you fast enough for their compression wave to blow you off the road. I usually set my cruise about 7 or 8 miles above the limit as long as the posted limit doesn't get me much above 70. I just don't feel comfortable driving much above 70. I guess I'll be the old grannie in the slow lane when the speed gets up to 75. ;)

I know what you mean about keeping it below 70, though I used to drive at alomost 80 when traffic conditions and law enforcement allowed it. But since gas got so expensive, I am finding I am getting so much better milage sticking to within 5 mph or so of the posted limit, that it is becoming a habit (I love the $$ savings). PLus I don't have to worry about getting stopped.

I have also seen far too many wrecked cars on the sides of highways.

Good luck with the drive!

Yep, I was wrong, it's 295.

Yes, it's called 'Construction Land', aka 'Barrel Borough', also known as Georgia. Still massive construction zones there, especially in the Southern part, and cops pulling drivers is quite common. I believe the speed limit in the construction zones is 55 mph. Watch out through there. Drive Safe!

This probably won't help you because we come down from NorthEast PA, but here's our route on MapQuest:

http://www.mapquest.com/maps/42+Waller+St.+Wilkes-Barre+PA+18702/555+Wild+Wing+Blvd.+Conway+SC/

We avoid I-695 and most of I-495 and we take the I-295 Richmond bypass.

This thread is a couple of years old, but the topic is pertinent. Watch going north on the state line between NC and Virginia. I had cruise control set to 76 going through NC's posted 70mph. Virginia goes down to 65. I got pulled over a mile after the state line in a speed trap doing 11 over the speed limit because of the change. Do not remember seeing the speed limit sign either. It was the end of the month also.

Thanks for bringing this thread back MickeyMaz! There's a lot of great info in it. I see you are from KOP! I'm right down 202 from you in Great Valley! :goodvibes
