specific school supplies frustration

The only reasonable response to this heinous crime would be the firing squad. Otherwise, there is just no deterrence, and you'll get other 7 year olds with uncovered books. Society as we know it will come to an end.

Defenestration followed by decapitation. Don't waste bullets on the little delinquents. ;)

You have a valid point. It would be more of a pain for the parents to have to gather the various remains, and after all, this is about punishing the parents.

Hmm....well in that case, how about drawing and quartering. That's quite a lot of clean up.

Perhaps it would be more productive to publish the names of those non-book-covering scoundrels in the local paper.

:rotfl: On one side you could have the police blotter, and on the other side the list of kids with RoseArt crayons, sponge bob folders, and paper-bag-covered text books. After all, it's not a big jump from a barbie pencil made in Taiwan to grand theft auto, right?

Most excellent. We now have the official 24 Hour Failure to Cover Compliance Plan in place.

And we aren't talking about the kind of drawing and quartering that can be done with Rose Art crayons and non-Fiskar scissors here. I think the superintendent is going to have to come up with the Compliance Plan Enforcement supplies list.

Yep, peer pressure is awesome...They publish names in newspapers for kids in sports, various academic accomplishments, send emails with kids' names recognizing them for various things, we got address and phone books up until high school. It's nice to be in a district that isn't so over the top with crap :thumbsup2.

Sure the do. If the courts have ruled that teachers can't put up charts with students' grades in a classroom because of privacy laws, do you really think they would allow schools to put out lists of who owes fines?

Please, don't argue with me on this one. I have a niece and nephew who were tracked down by their mentally ill mother because of some information the private school they were attending published. My ex-SIL went to the school, pulled them out of class and took them. The damage she did while she had them will haunt both my niece and nephew for life. All of this could have been avoided if the private school had to follow the same privacy laws that public schools do.

Schools cannot publish a students name without the consent of the parents - even for honor rolls, sports, or even in the programs I do for our concerts. If the parent hasn't signed the consent form, the name of the student doesn't go out to anyone for any reason.

:woohoo:

I bet we can charge admission to the semi-annual drawing and quartering (one at the start of each semester) and call it a sporting event. We could get the PTA to sell cookies.

The list wasn't published though, it was sent in a packet of information with other information for graduating seniors. If your name was on the list and you didn't pay up before a certain date, you didn't graduate, period. I know that there is an opt out feature on our back to school forms each year so it is possible anyone that opted out was not on that list, there is no way for me to know that I guess.

Wouldn't it be better to require mandatory attendance for all parents, in keeping with the spirit of the Compliance Plan?

We could still charge admission and sell cookies, but in countries with public executions, they find that it's much more effective if you require everyone to watch. You'd better believe those scofflaw parents will have the kids' textbooks covered before they even get them next time around. And it fits in well with the whole public shame thing that some folks are so fond of.

If the list was sent out that is the same as being published. It is going to the general public of the school. It goes back teachers not even being able to post grades next to a child's name in a public place, ie the classroom. It is against privacy laws to do so.

Maybe we should pillory the children first...or maybe pillory the parents after! Then the PTA could sell rotten vegetables and eggs suitable for throwing.

You are right; attendance must be mandatory, with a suitable punishment for being absent. Of course it should be a lighter punishment than drawing and quartering (after the pillory of course). Maybe a nice clean stoning by the other parents.

Oh, get over it already

My dgd will be in the 4th grade this year and he recieved his school supply list. Among the request were 3 packs of 12 American made pencils and Crayola crayons. We priced the pencils and they were $14.95 for 12 and the package stated American made:scared1: and what's wrong with Rose Art crayons?:confused3

I have never seen a pack of 12 pencils for $14.95 anywhere - and I love to browse around in office supply stores.. Where did you find those?

I'm still coloring at the age of 61.. Don't waste your money on junk crayons - you'll have to replace them and the coloring is awful.. Crayola crayons will be going on sale for next to nothing any minute now.. They always do this time of year..

Adult DD is terrified of what her DD's "list" is going to cost for the 8th grade this year.. She already knows that the special calculator is well over $75 - and that's just one thing! They may have to take out a 2nd mortgage on the house - LOL..;)

On another note, the list that came home from dd#2 in 2nd grade stunned me.

They wanted tennis balls(ok I get that for the chair bottoms) 1 6-pack Northern toilet paper, 3 pack brawny paper towels, 1 ream colored print paper, 1 ream white print paper, 6 3pks of glue sticks, 2 school glue, 2 blue gel glue, 3 pack Kleenex tissues, 2 each prong folders red, blue, white, purple, yellow & orange, 3 single subject wide ruled notebooks in each color above, 4 packs wide ruled liner paper, 4 marble notebooks black only, 2 fiskar scissors, 12- 12 packs of sharpened pencils, 2 12pks red pens, 4 black dry erase markers,2 wooden rulers, 6 boxes crayola 24 ct, 4 box crayola markers, 4 boxes crayola colored pencils. 4 2 pack pink erasers, 64oz hand sanitizer and 24oz hand soap, paper cups, plates, napkins-no print, 1 bx each ziploc brand(specified!) sandwich, quart and gallon bags, snacks for 30 (individually wrapped) juice boxes for 30, 10-pack computer disks, 2gb thumbdrive, 2 new books for the classroom, duct tape (hated to think what they were going to do with this!) The hardest thing to find were the two index card books- separate ones weren't allowed they had to be in preforated books.

I now keep much of the supply at home to send throughout the year so that my daughter is never without. I don't need to supply the whole class!

Yup- our schools ask for doubles and triples of items too- because the teachers know only half the class is actually going to send the stuff in. Also, it is all pooled for the class. Kills me.... I buy all the stuff asked for and more and DD hardly even gets to use it. She asks me for pencils since the teacher has all of hers...
Teacher asks for 8 composition notebooks, DD uses 2 last year and brings a note home asking for more! Tell me I am not supplying the class with notebooks! So not cool in my mind.... I wrote the teacher a note, as I really didn't have the money to go out and buy 4 more notebooks when I sent in 6 more than DD had already used, sorry.

What also drives me crazy are the endless requests for random things throughout the year. I heard of one room parent that requested a slightly large amount of money from the class at the start of the school year and then she or the teacher purchased all those random things they needed during the year. The room mom also purchased the Christmas and end-of-year gifts for the teacher from the class from this collection. I would love this option! But understand why others would prefer to pay a little here and a little there throughout the year.

I was room mom last year in DD's 4th grade class and we were not even allowed to ask parents for anything! No collections for parties or teacher gifts, nothing. I would love to be able to ask other parents for help in the room, but the school won't allow it due to some kids' parents not being able to afford to send items or money in.....

I understand that some kids can't afford the supplies. That's not my issue. My issue is when the school/teacher asks me to supply far more than my child would use in 2 years, much less in one, even if she has to share with another child. This year, I am going to send in most of the list.... at least one of each item on it- but keep the rest until she needs it. I hate the pooled resource idea.... I can see it with some items, but not everything she brings in. I have never seen a pair of scissors come back at the end of the year, or any other leftover supply. So I am not going to send in as much. If she needs it, she lets me know.... or I will ask her teacher when I am there.

And I still say the puppy folder is soo much cooler than the red one.... let the kids have some personality! It never made me feel bad when i couldn't have the puppy folder if we couldn't afford it at that moment.... dunno why they have to make everything so equal and the same... the same is boring.

Reading this thread makes me so very happy that all three of my kids are out of elementary school. Youngest starts middle school this year.

School supplies consist of pencils (of our choice), 3 ring binder, filler paper, pens, various math supplies, ect.

No more crayons and scissors and markers and all the other "craft supplies".

If your SIL was mentally ill why wasn't there some sort of court order in place that prevented the school from releasing the kids to her?? Every year we have to sign something that states both parents can pick up their children unless a custody order dictates otherwise. That could have prevented the situation as well.

Schools "cannot publish" names without consent of the parents. Only they do. I signed a form that stated I didn't want my children's names listed on any sort of online source. I am fine with pictures and names being in the yearbook but NOT the school website. That was fine until they reached the age where they were eligible for the honor roll. They both made it, their names were put in the school newsletter (fine), and then that newsletter was posted online (NOT FINE). And there is no way now to get rid of that. My kids now come up on a google search. To say I am ticked would be an understatement.

All the time. When DS19 graduated last year, they sent home a list of all the outstanding fees owed to the school district for all the kids graduating. There were many, MANY kids on that list that had $100/s of dollars from damaged/lost books, etc.-going back to elementary school for some of them. One kid "lost" a video camera to the tune of $1000 too :scared1: Stop by your local school some day and look at the books...

Our school just doesn't release your report card and diploma until any outstanding fines are paid--so when you need your diploma you will eventually pay up. I had to dig mine out one year when I was applying for a job because you needed to prove you graduated to get the job!
