Special Requests for GCH Standard Room?

I am considering biting the bullet this year and staying at the GCH instead of the BWPPI for our annual holiday trip. I'd be getting standard room, so I am wondering if helpful DISers have any advice on any special requests I should make for a standard room that a first timer at GCH wouldn't know. I really appreciate it!

Depending on your budget, and who is traveling with you, gift baskets have always been popular with my wife and daughter. You can pre-order from Disney and they will be waiting in your room when you check in. Two memorable choices were 1) A decorated christmas tree with plush characters, cokie and edibles as decorations, and a mouse ear topper 2) Princess basket with autograph book and activities for my daughter.

I realize you were probably asking for views/location information, but if you are first time staying at the GCH, little extra surprise in room is nice :)

You might want to skim through the Grand Californian Superthread.

Most of the Standard View rooms are at the front of the hotel, but there are some in other areas. A room that does not meet the requirements of an upgraded view category is Standard view.

Some room requests you might make:
  • Near the elevators adjacent to Napa Rose
  • Specify bed type
  • High floor
  • Facing DCA

Thank you for this. I may do something special since it is Christmas, but I don't want to pay of an upgraded view (as we don't spend too much time looking out the window!). I do remember hearing that the walk within GCH can be very long, so I want to avoid that if I can. I assume by asking for a room near the Napa Rose elevators that gives us a better chance to be closer to the entrance to the park without having to spring for a DTD, theme park, or pool view?

You assume correctly. A room near the Napa Rose elevators allows convenient access to the GCH entrance to DCA.
