I heard that NASA plans to launch the shuttle July 13th. I read on varies links that it's very visable from WDW. Can anyone give me hints on where best at WDW to see the launch? It will be a first time event for us Californians.

You won't be able to see the shuttle launch from WDW. Cape Canaveral is over an hour east of Disney. The shuttle moves east over the ocean, it does not launch over land. If you really want to see it, you can drive to any of the beaches in the vicinity of Cape Canaveral.

Yeah, I doubt you'd be able to see it.

But, you could plan a Cape Canaveral trip and conveniently stay a week at Disney! :cool1: Just a little added bonus ;) :D

It's only a short drive to the launch site. It would be a good day trip.

A few years back we did see the shuttle launch from the beach at the Poly. However, since it was so far away, it was already pretty far up by the time you could see it and it was a mere bright light in the sky.

This year, we have purchased viewing tickets for the launch at Kennedy. Only caveat is that there is no refund if the launch is delayed till after you leave. If you go to nasa.gov you can search for shuttle viewing and it will list the most popular off-site viewing areas. You can also buy the tickets for viewing on-site (if there are some still available.)

We watched the shuttle launch a few years ago from SeaWorld. They made announcements throughout the park and you could definitely see it. It did not look like an airplane. You could make out the contours of the shuttle. It was very memorable.

You can definitely see the Shuttle from WDW. We've watched it twice. Assuming clear skies you can see it very clearly and it's extremely bright as the engines burn. We were at EPCOT once, watched the launch on TV, walked outside and watched it climb! It was great!!

If you do have the time that day and don't want to go to the coast, just drive east of Orlando a short distance for an even better view. Traffic is intense though on the Beeline before and after the launch.

Have fun!

I started another thread about this subject about a week ago and there were many responses saying that YES..you could see the launch from WDW. I guess it really depends on the weather.

I'm a Californian too from Lodi! We'll be there from 7/6-7/14. I hope the shuttle lanches on the scheduled day or we'll miss it.
