Space Shuttle not heard from

I have always been terrified of those shuttle landings. It is not like an airplane where the pilot can wave off and go around! They basically glide in and if something is just the least little bit off it struck me as a recipe for disaster! I remember watching the landings just in awe that you could land something that big with basically no engine power to guide you!

My prayers are with the families and the members of the NASA community.

I am in complete and utter shock. I cannot believe this is happening. How sad for the families. I cannot imagine watching this unfold if my loved one was on board. My thoughts and prayers are with them

I'm stunned and just overwhelmed with sadness. I can't help but think - How much more can we take??

My husband came in from the store and said he heard on NPR about the terrible accident and my 4 yr. old heard him say "shuttle" and immediately began chiming in "MOMMY, MOMMY, my teachers (at day school) told us about the shuttle and there are 7 people in it!!" She was so excited to tell us that she knew all about the shuttle. I just didn't have the heart to tell her what Dad was talking about. But at breakfast she prayed for, among other things, the 7 astronauts on the shuttle.

God bless us all.

This is a very sad day for NASA and the whole USA.

DH just called me. He was refereeing a soccer game and saw the shuttle fly over, he then heard a loud "sonic boom" and saw it start to break up.

It is not unusual to see the shuttle fly over on re-entry and they were admiring it and then new something wasn't right.

This is just terrible. I feel so awful for the families.

:( My prayers are add here in NY for the Columbia's crew and their families. :(

Someone on the radio equated the landing of the shuttle to a "free-gliding large brick".

:(
My heart and prayers also go out to the seven astronauts of the Spaceship Columbia and their families. Another sad day for our nation. :(

How horrible. :( My prayers go out to the crew and their families. :(

This is heartbreaking :( I am praying for the families these astronauts left behind.

God Bless the crew and their families.

God bless us all.

At a time when 9/11 is still foremost in our minds, the American people have taken another blow to our already fragile psyche! Let us keep the thoughts of our astronauts and their families in our hearts and minds as we proceed through another dark day in American history! God Bless America!:(

I can not beleive my eyes. The program had lots of set backs this past year with the ceramic tiles and the transports. We were just at KSC in July and 2 missions have been delayed in 2002. This is beyond belief. I can not imagine what they families at the cape are going through. It is a sad day....again.

More prayers for the families, the country, and the world.

:( :( :( :( :(

Our prayers are with the families and NASA. Thoughts go back to The Challenger January 28, 1986.

My family went outside around 8:00 to watch the shuttle pass over Texas. We have done this several times, and we are familiar with the path that it normally takes as is flies over the area. It was very foggy in the area this morning, and we thought we were probably not going to be able to see it through the thick fog. We were eventually able to locate a vapor trail. We started to get excited, but then we realized the trail wasn't going in the normal direction. We watched for a minute, and then we figured the trail must have been from a jet since it was traveling in the wrong direction. We then ran into the house to see if the landing was being shown on TV. It was then that we learned that NASA had lost contact with the shuttle just a few minutes before. We were sad to learn what was really happening.

Everyone please continue to pray for the families of these astronauts and for our country!

I got up to watch the shuttle land on TV. Also because the sonic boom usually scares me so much when it wakes me. It was so sad to see the reporter realize that he didn't see the shuttle even though it was 3 seconds to landing time. The story unfolding has been too much to watch. I pray for the astronauts and their families.

Also, please keep in mind those families and astronauts on the space station...this tragedy is a reminder of how dangerous their job is.
