Here's a random question ... Why are the cars in the Space Mountain ride in CA set up so that you sit side by side, two to a car like a conventional coaster, but in WDW you sit one behind the other? How is it set up in other Disneylands?

Maybe the Podcast team can go on a field trip to Paris, Tokyo and Hong Kong to answer this question!

I think Kevin would be willing to go on this fact finding mission! :lmao: :lmao:

the DL version has been though the major refurb that the WDW version is about to go though

I heard a rumor that Space Mountain will not be going through the big refurb. I could be wrong, but the downtime is only for a couple of weeks in Jan. 2009.

But I'm pretty sure CA was always this way even before the refurb.

Did you ever see the video on Youtube of Space Mt with the lights on? It's not quite the same.

Tokyo is side-by-side like CA. I was just there Oct 20-21. I've got a review on the Camping Community Board, linked on the Trip Reports board. I've also sent in audio reviews of both Tokyo Disneyland and Disney Sea to the podcast.

CA was always that way - 2x2. There is only one track in the building, unlike the 2 tracks in WDW. The building there is a bit bigger to allow for this - possibly to enhance ride capacity per hour. I'd love to actually see the ride stats on both comparably.

As I'm writing, we were trying to do the math on how many passengers per vehicle in each. Each train in DL carries 16 passengers and launches about 3 minutes apart. It's been a while for me on SM in WDW, so I can't identify timing, but I think it's 6 passengers per train. The smaller WDW trains possibly allow for more to be on the track at once.

I would love to see the stats too...I also really hope SM in the MK goes down for a major refurb soon as it is in desperate need of it imo. I am hoping for a refurb like they did with with Haunted Mansion, POTC and Spaceship Earth where not too much was changed but it was "plussed".

We love the plussing they did when they refurbed our SM here at DL. They took the time to really seal the cracks in the shell to get rid of light leaks. Then, adding the new track made all the difference in the world. The ride is extremely smooth and zippy - no more bone-jarring rattle! It's really ashame that many who are complaining about shutting down the WDW SM aren't looking at the long-term benefit of what they need to do to bring that ride back to the proper quality levels.

It's also interesting, from a demographics standpoint, to see how upset everyone is about the WDW refurb length vs. how everyone out here in DL took our year+ closure in stride. It really says a lot about how differently people look at their touring strategies and their attitudes toward the perceived value of their vacation when it comes to each individual park in comparison. I can see where the WDW folks are in it more for the "I'm spending my dollar on our vacation of a lifetime and they dare to close ....", rather than the "hey we're just hanging out at DL for the weekend - we can see it next time" types.

I understand what you are saying, but DL has more roller coasters than MK. You guys also have the Matterhorne. I can understand why poeple are upset, but I agree that it is in need of a solid rehab with plusing.

I can look at it from the standpoint that we miss it this time and we ride it next time. But, my sister who is visiting in January can't. She is not planning on going back anytime soon. I think the podcast team has said it many times before. CA has more local visitors and FL has more tourist visitors. FL has more appeal for the tourist because there is more to offer. But, I agree with you that I'd like to see rides updated so we can enjoy them more in the future.

I agree with the pp about the every year visitors vs. the once in a while visitors but again with how well the other major attractions at WDW are themed (i.e. EE, Splash Mountain, RnR, ToT etc.) SM is reeeally showing its age
