Space Mountain Down For Two Months

Nailed it! Aside from rides just randomly going down all the time everyday, DL gives minimal notice for rides going down for refurbs. I got used to WDW giving at least 3 months warning. I was once able to move our trip one week so we could hit Splash Mt...thanks to plenty of refurb notice. With DL, it's about 6 weeks max, though it's usually 2-4 weeks. Shoot, I remember awhile back when Soarin' went down for a month+ with about 10 days notice.

I got used to going to WDW when Splash was down almost every January, but I appreciated the ability to predict closures. I'm trying not to look forward specifically to any one ride, just in case, but there are certain rides that I would be disappointed to miss. If any rides randomly go down, we'll just blame the Overtakers (from the Kingdom Keepers book series).

I think I got confused! I must have been thinking about a different incident, OSHA was involved in a big way, I think Alice in Wonderland was effected... Definitely meandered my way :offtopic: and mixed in bad info- thanks for the correct! I better go find a second cup of coffee... :drinking1
There were actually 2 incidents about 20 days apart. One where a car released and struck a maintenance worker in Oct 2012, followed by the window washer fall, which caused them to take down a bunch. It was also the cause of Alices issues too. You can read about it here at the OSHA site https://www.dir.ca.gov/dosh/citation.html

Yep, SOarin' went down with very little notice due to OSHA threatening to close it (if OSHA closes it, there is more involved to get it reopened.) There were issues with railings for maintenance, which didn't effect riders, but did effect the ability to set up the ride. When OSHA threatens, you act quick. (Yes, I deal with OSHA...)

Remember that often the rides go down because of guest behavior, not because of the rides themselves. That is why it happens so unpredictably and seemingly so often. For example, the rides have strict time limits for loading and unloading. Right before loading is not the time to start arguing with your party and switching seats or rows. If the guests take too long to board or disembark, guess what? The ride shuts down and the system has to re-boot. And all the other guests have to suffer. CM friends have told me about guests who try to touch walls or refuse to keep their hands, arms, feet, and legs inside the vehicle, thus setting off sensors. Yep, you guessed it. The ride shuts down again and the system has to re-boot. Selfie sticks were a nightmare in this regard. So it isn't always Disney's fault that the rides go down as often as they do.

Nailed it! With the exception of Indy, the majority of time a ride shuts down is guest related. My kids were on Matterhorn when I watched a family loading that started arguing over who was riding where. Despite being asked to sit down and get belted, they continued arguing, and down went the ride. It took 30 mins to get everyone off the ride. Then they have to cycle it. Similar thing happens on Space Mountain, Big Thunder, Screamin', and Racers. People dropping or throwing things is another ride stopper.

Just a heads up for all who were following along on this....DLR just posted their schedule for Monday, August 21st (our arrival day) & they are showing Space Mountain down for refurbishment starting that day.

Noooooooo, this makes me so sad!

I checked the map feature, which often gives total length of refurbs. Can't seem to see anything other than just being down for Aug 21. So I can't see how long it will last.

I would imagine if they didn't get Ghost Galaxy up and running by October, there'd be a lot of angry Halloween fans.

Once it was announced that Hyperspace Mtn was gone, I didn't have a strong desire to ride Space Mtn (having been on MK's version numerous times), so I won't personally mind if it's down.

I know this is an older post, but since Space Mountain at DL is my favorite ride of ALL DL and WDW, I had to say something.
I went on SM in MK in May - ummmmmm, I didn't care for it. The jerking around, and lack of quality music. We had a FP to do it again, and I passed.
Everyone has their preferences, I understand. But they are not the same ride by a long shot. IMHO

I had heard it was going down in August, hope the dates of the 21st stick...we'll be there the first week of August...our first trip in 19 years with our three college aged kids...they'd be bummed if it was closed on our trek.

Ack! First I had to tell DH he missed Hyper Space Mountain. Now I have to break the news to him that there will be no Space Mountain at all. :crazy2:

... on a happier note, it appears the Haunted Mansion should still be open that day. I feared that was the day they'd take it down for the HMH overlay.

It looks like the refurbishment will be from August 21 through September 14, 2017.

the 14th is our first day of 7! So it'll be open for 6 of our 7 days. I'll take that for sure. I was worried I'd have to break the news to our older kid who loved Space Mountain at Magic Kingdom on our 2015 trip, but then Space Mountain at Disneyland on the same trip was down to retheme to HSM.

Just read on Undercover Tourist that SM will only be closed through September 7. How reliable are they?

When I checked the Disneyland site today, I saw the same info/dates that figment_jii shared here yesterday -- Space Mountain down from 8/21 - 9/14.

Thanks, I couldn't find it on the DL site.

It's in a very specific place. I found that if I kept the calendar in July, I could not pull up the down dates for Space Mountain, for some reason. So I went to the August calendar for that ride. I then clicked on the little map on the Space Mountain page, which opened up a larger map. And then up popped the exact thing that figment_jii posted here yesterday (as a screen grab), with the closure dates.
