Hey DIS'ers!

Taking my kids to see The Mouse for their first time this September. Love the...
  • give your kids a budget
  • don't buy souvenirs until the end the day (or trip)

...tips that I have found here on the boards. Was just curious if I could pick the brain of the Disney Vets to get more tips related to kids souvenirs. Anything souvenir related would help tremendously (unique souvenirs, budget, places to shop, etc). If it helps my boys will be eight and three at the time of our trip.

Thanks in advance DIS'ers! :disrocks:

I somewhat disaggree with waiting until the end of the trip to buy the souviners.
Part of the fun of some souviners is to use them or have them during the stay. Like the light up things for the night, balloons, shirts, etc...those things are so cool to do or have for the entire trip. It adds to the memories.

Now I understand the decision to wait, as the children can see something else and that can cause stree or an unwanted "meltdown" because they have spent their money already.
But with a parents guidence purchasing a souviner early in the trip so exciting. Only you know your kids and which would be best for them.

Enjoy your stay!

i always buy our dd t-shirts @ the disney store here or walmart. go to the dollar tree to buy a lot of the glow sticks or just trinkets for the trip for them to play with in the parks. be sure and go to the mickey mart in dtd cause they have a lot of things where you can buy 4 things for just $10. it's easy to get caught up with all the merchandise and buy, buy, buy! be sure and go in the biggest disney store ever in dtd. i always buy our dd a t-shirt every yr and there only like $22. some you can get cheaper.
have fun!

One of the easiest and cheapest souvenirs we have enjoyed over the years are the pressed pennies. We give each child a roll of quarters and the correct amount of shiny new pennies to go with it. There are some darling ways to keep all of these in the creative disigns here on the DIS. We have our boys collect them in the books that we purchased at Disney. It is so fun for them to search out new penny designs in the parks. They have enjoyed this so much and now they have even found some friends that they trade with. This is also a fun inexpensive gift to bring back for their friends and cousins etc.:thumbsup2
The other thing we have done is to have the kids earn disney money for chores etc. and put it all on a gift card for them to use while there. We use the when it's gone it's gone approach. Usually though they have plenty left on the card when we return.
Have a blast!:yay:

I also buy my daughter's Disney shirts ahead of time at the Disney store. Usually they have a sale where you can buy shirts for $5. We let her pick out 5 or so shirts she cannot wear until our next Disney trip and then whenever she wears the shirt she remembers her trip. She wears them for every trip and enjoys being "Disneyfied" while there.

We also handle all her Disney money. We let grandparents know that we will going to Disney. This way for Christmas or Birthdays they can send her a gift card for Disney she can spend at the parks. If you have a smart phone there is an app that lets you see the running total of exactly what is on the gift card. We divide her money by the amount of days we will be there and she can spend "so much" a day, which usually works out to $20 per day or so.

I have found pretty much every park has about the same souvenirs for the most part. Most things can be found in DownTown Disney. You know your children. If you think they are more likely to find something else they want save their money for the end. However if they are more than likely to be happy with what they got and understand the concept than let the spend till it's out.

I agree with the pressed pennies. There is a website that has a list of all the pennies in WDW. We made a list of what characters my son really likes and where to find the pennies for them. Each park had it's own index card. Then it was like a treasure hunt trying to find where the machines were. We also got all the ones at the ride exits, for the rides that have them.

We bring M&M tubes filled with pennies and quarters, and keep more in the hotel room. I also have a small coin pouch I carried for the finished pennies. Our first day we buy the penny collector book and each night we look at them all before putting them in the book.

My son and I really enjoyed it

Awesome! What is the name of the app so I can download it?

Man I love this place. So helpful. :disrocks:

We will probably just pay for the smaller souvenirs out of our pocket instead of their budget. Their budget is more for keepsake type items (plush dolls, toys, etc).

We live in Southern California and are regular visitors to Disneyland. My kids attire is about 50% Disney (closer to 90% if you count the Marvel items). We usually pick up Disney clothes wherever we can find them cheap (the old online Disney outlet was great for this). Will definitely have to check out the DTD stores. Thanks for tip!

We will definitely be doing pressed pennies. Have tons of change around the house anyhow so I can consider this a "free" souvenir. Plus I'm sure the kids will love emptying out the M&M tubes.

@ratlenhum
Do you know the name of that website off the top of your head. If not, I'm sure I can just "google" it and come across something.

Yes we plan to buy them each a Disney gift card with about $20/day.

We definitely reward them for chores but also love the birthday idea. I think I also read on some other Disboard post that one member credits her kids for everyday that they go on a walk. She told her kids it wasn't exactly how fast they walk but how far and it definitely helped get them in shape for all the walking around WDW. Brilliant!

I have also heard that most merchandise is also available everywhere and that alot of the unique merchandise (i.e. resort specific) merchandise is no longer available. I think that is a shame but just helps us to do one big shopping spree at the end of our trip. We'll probably review the pictures of the items that liked and see what they want. At Disneyland they have a World of Disney store in DTD where they pretty wide variety. I am assuming they have a version of this in WDW. The drawback is that any ride specific stuff may not be found in DTD but only at the ride gift shop (or kiosk) itself. If any of the kids are really pushing for these items and we (parents) are pretty sure they would enjoy and for more than a moment we may pick those up right there and then and just have them "package deliver" it to the room.

@Megkel I'm interested in the name of the app too if you have it.

Well...this may be totally off what you are looking for but this is what I remember from my Disney trips as a kid (and went LOTS of times at all ages):

1. Family tradition - Everyone in the family got a disney hat or ears the first day of the trip. We either bought them at World of Disney or at the hat shop on Main Street. We wore them the entire trip and it was just one of those traditions that we still keep today as adults. No price can be put one memories like that and as kids it was a fun souvenier to enjoy the entire trip as a group (hats did were never "matching" we always chose our own).

2.The rest was play it by ear throughout the trip. If any of us kids (me and my brother 10 months apart and many trips with my two cousins only a couple years older) really fell in love with something then we got it at whatever point of the trip it was. Why wait? One year me and my cousin Courtney wanted these silly mickey purses and a retractable hair brush. Silly...but we carried them with us the entire trip. Usually if it was just my parents, me and my brother then I went with a stuffed toy. I have a tendency to reach into the racks and get "attached" to one easily...even if it's flawed in some way.

But that was usually it. Never spent a ridiculous amount on souveniers unless you include pics (this was before PP was available eith CDs and stuff). We loved posing for pics as kids so parents let us do that a lot but that's generally a seperate thing from souveniers.

Really it's up to you. As kids we were always aware of the "limits" without them needing to be explained or put on gift cards. But we'd been going since I was a year old so that may be just a result of the "rules" being ingrained before we ever had a chance to think or expect mote. But my favorite thing was the family tradition with the hats/ears. We still do that to this day and I am now 27. Funny how a small thing like that can really impact your memories.

Oh...and the boys (my brother and cousin Jon) usually went for things at Epcot like swords or Indiana Jones stuff or whatever. Boy things...rarely ever stuffed toys or anything like that. Maybe a sling shot once...can't remember that all that well.

The Disney Gift Card app is called: Disney Gift Card :rotfl:

"Information about the Disney Gift card is now easily accessible on your iPhone. With the Disney Gift Card iPhone app, you can view your current balance and learn more about Disney Gift Cards. Keep track of the entire family by creating custom labels for each gift card in your party."

I always always always buy Disney Pez from the 99 cent store before our trips. My kids love them while waiting in line.

On our last trip I put together Tinkerbelle baskets for my girls. I got them each a stuffed Tink, Tink trading pin, notepad, pen, toothbrush, Pez, t-shirt, hairbands, rings with stick on earrings and a deck of Tink playing card...plus a Tink gift card. It was the highlight of our trip for them. I carried them on the plane wrapped in cellophane in a large shopping bag. I will try to post a pic soon...my girls never asked for anything that trip!

i always make a treat bag before we leave and give it to DD (and this year DS!) at the hotel. I fill it with Disney PEZ, glow sticks, Disney picture frame, this year toy story barbie, new crown, princess ring pops, disney washcloth disney tattoo, princess wall and window clings. just little things i can find cheap.

at the park she has her money and she is allowed to get what she wants, with a little steering in the right direction. usually something at the begining to have through the trip and a keepsake something near the end after she has seen what there is. keepsake wise she has bought charms for her bracelet, castle penny bank, cinderella dress picture holder and ariel jewelry box. she still uses everyone of them in her room. and the first purchase is usually a big floppy stuffed animal.

in the past we have bought minnie ears, light spinner, ariel sunglasses, princess hat, lanyard and pins, pressed penny book and autograph book. when we come home we put those things away till our next trip and they are like new toys again for her at disney.

cant wait to start the collection for DS 9mos. getting first mickey ears in 9 days:woohoo:

and the traditions: eating at Ohana and watching fireworks, having picture with daddy in Goofy pirate ears are a must:thumbsup2

Our family traditions are slightly different then most since we live a short distance from the World.

1. We buy our souvenirs at DTD since they offer the best discounts (Disney Visa, DVC, Annual pass ect)
2. We make most of our shirts using iron ons from the Creative board or our Yudu machine.
3. We bring light sticks for our DD and other little kids around us for parades (only $1 for a tube of the bracelet ones)
4. Remember that if you spurge for a balloon and it pops just take it back to the CM that sales them and you can get a free replacement.

Our DDs earn their "Disney Dollars" before we ever leave for our trip. They have set chores that they must do each day/week. They start out each week with 10 Disney Dollars. For any chore they fail to complete, they lose a dollar. Arguing, talking back, fighting, etc loses money too. They can earn "Bonus Bucks" by "being caught" doing something nice or extra for someone else. This way, they are in total control of the amount of spending money they have for vacation. When we arrive, we go to the gift shop & put that amount onto separate gift cards for each DD. They can use it for pretty much whatever they want but we have veto power if necessary. Our older DDs do great on their own. We sometimes have to remind our youngest DD that she still has X number of days left so she might want to save some. It works so well in WDW that we use the same system when we take vacations to other places.

1. EPCOT Innoventions has a velcro display where you can make a frog bracelet with accessories. It's free!

2. We gave each of our older kids (not the 1yo) a $25 budget, then we paid for EPCOT Passports and a hat for each of them.

3. We collected stickers (free) given out by lots of different types of people. They will go in a scrapbook for each child (when we buy the books :lmao:) along with their autographs and pics.

4. We used spiral-bound notecards (3"x5") for autographs. They were easy to carry and were inexpensive.

5. EPCOT has a free craft (ours was a stick picture of Duffy to color) when you visit each country.

Happy hunting!

Generally, I do not buy my children souvenirs. They usually save about $25 each and can spend it as they wish.

However, i have purchased a set of Mickey ears or two. They looks really cute in the photos, can be taken back to WDW on the next trip, and can be useful on the "funny hat day" at school.

I would really suggest have them wait till the end of the day or trip. This way you don't have to deal with extra stuff till the end.

Have fun!

Not sure the ages of your children, but last time we went, my girls were 5, 3, and 2. Naturally, they loved and wanted every stuffed toy they saw. We bought a couple and then if they saw some they just loved, I took a picture of them holding it. Amazingly enough, this worked beautifully. I think once they knew they could at least see all the cool stuff again they were fine. We have lots of pictures and even now, 6 years later, they still like to look at them.

In fact, the other day I was discussing how they can start saving their money for stuff and my 11yo said, "and don't forget...you'll take a picture of the stuff we can't buy!"
