Southwest???

If I have say a 3pm flight booked and decide I want to take an earlier flight that day. Can I show up at the airport and try to get on the flight?? and if they have room will they charge me more money if they don't have any of my discount seats left???

You can try and I've been successful once with no change in fees. Other times we've been told no but usually because there are other standbys already waiting.

I don't have personal experience with this, but according to Southwest's site:
To travel standby on another flight, you must upgrade this ticket to the full unrestricted fare.

lol! I happened to notice it because I've been trying to get a later return flight and there's been nothing past 11:00am. on the least expensive fares...I just keep on looking to see if it opens up. Hopefully you'll find an earlier flight.

This is probably the only area where I liked ATA better than SW (other than assigned seats). On SW, they charge you; on ATA, you could stand by on an earlier flight with no penalty, and I took advantage of that many times. But on the flipside, ATA charges penalties for changing or cancelling your tickets, whereas SW does not.

I decdied to just purchase the different flight....My price went up after a few weeks then I changed my mind on when too leave....but the difference is only $20

I think you made the right choice. In all my years of travel I have NEVER gotten SW to let me just take the earlier flight if I had a discounted ticket.
