Southwest to have assigned seating

Like I said, I ask the flight attendants each time if I can save seats. They’ve never said no.

And it’s not just $25. It’s $200 total round trip
But they also won’t help you if someone wants that seat. As someone else said, shame on you for skirting the system. Customers like you are what is causing the change. If you don’t have the $200 you shouldn’t be going.

I’m very excited for this change. I fly a lot and my SW flights always take longer to fully board because of the seat jockeying and FA’s having to help people find that last empty middle seat somewhere on the plane. Not mention the mass number of preboards and family boarding that makes anything other than A group useless for finding seats that meet someone’s preferences. My kid with GAD actually has requested NOT to fly with them anymore because of the boarding process.

As for pricing, since they used up the fuel they scored for a ridiculously low rate, their prices haven’t been lower out of my airports. It’s just easier to accumulate and use their miles which is why I use them at all.
If you fly a lot with the three legacy airlines you should know that SW boards faster than all of them by a decent margin. SW budgets 30 minutes for boarding and usually pushes back early. The legacies budget 40 minutes for the same plane and are often late, but very rarely early.

I already paid for early bird both ways for my September trip, I wonder what happens now. When does this go into effect.
According to the article i read, couldn't find it in the link provide - 2025 after they modify the seating to have more leg room.

I’ve been on legacy airline flights that boarded quickly. It usually just meant sitting on the tarmac longer until we’re cleared for takeoff. Same with delayed boarding, though, because we missed our scheduled slot. Is Southwest actually taking off earlier than scheduled on a regular basis or just pushing off the gate early?

Statistically, yes. But based on where I fly, the reality is different. The last 6 flights I’ve been on have pushed back 10-15 minutes late because of how long it took for people to find a seat. The FA’s repeating over and over “This is a full flight and only middle seats are available. Please take the first available seat so we can push back on time.” And then the pilot once we are in the air “we got a bit of a late start but we can make up the time in the air.” The routes I fly are typically full, and popular for leisure tourists who may not be experienced travelers, or who are just entitled and think they can board last minute and get 3 seats together by making people move.

Yes, shame on me. I’m a horrible person. Please.

I’m glad Southwest is making this change. I want to have a reserved seat as do most people.

And your point is??? Others pay it for the benefits of boarding before those who do not. If you can't afford to pay the fee, don't expect to sit together. If the $200 is going to break your budget, maybe you shouldn't be going on vacation or flying.

I think my point is clear. The actual employees of Southwest Airlines did not tell me I couldn’t save seats for my family. If it’s okay with them, why are u acting like I said I kill puppies in my free time? Dang

All of this pearl clutching is over the top

How much of that time savings is due to less people on Southwest are trying to bring carryon bags to avoid the bag fees? How much time could be saved by the legacy airlines if checked bags were free but using the overhead bins cost $100? I'm guessing at least 10 minutes.

I wonder how you are going to feel when SW starts charging for the privilege of picking a specific seat, like most other airlines do these days.

My husband MUST fly in an aisle seat with extra legroom, or he can’t fly. I chalk the cost of paying for extra legroom - or worse, business class if what he needs in coach is unavailable - up as part of the cost of travel.

I don't fly SW (I think I've taken two trips with them in the last decade), but I noticed you didn't say the FA's said "yes". "Not saying no" <> "saying yes".

Only one flight attendant had a condition…he asked me to reserve seats past a certain row. I did what he asked.

Everyone else said okay

The times I've been late recently were all on SW flights LOL
I don't usually have any issues when I fly United.

How will I feel? Lol. I’m sure Southwest is making this change so they can charge people to select certain seats.

Sure, Jan. You mentioned they didn't say "no", that is not yes. At this point, I think you are trolling. Have a nice day and bless your heart!

Tbh I would pay the use the overhead bin anyway for MCO flights. Baggage claim there is such a mess. Same with my home airport (BWI). It's why I do carry on only for that route.

They should just make seat selection a paid upgrade. Pay for seat selection, you're in Group A. Get on the plane first, sit in your assigned seat. Everyone else is in Boarding groups B and C, filling up everything else available.

That won’t address the families must sit together issue. The same parents who won’t pay for EBCI won’t pay for seat selection. And then demand they have to sit with their kids.

There will no doubt be people/families that will refuse to pay for a selected seat but then complain about the ones they are assigned and ask others to move because someone needs to sit next to someone. There are people who fly the cheapest and are not willing to accept the crumbs they get (which is why the price was cheaper).

Well your flight time is based on gate to gate using an average taxing time as well. The PP is talking about boarding the quickest. Whether there is weather, a back up of planes or something else is out of any airline's actual control but isn't related to when they are pushing off the gate which is based on "is this plane ready to go".

More airlines should adopt Alaska Airlines policy of giving you 2,500 miles per bag if the bags aren't at baggage claim within 20 minutes of the aircraft door opening.

I imagine they'll block off seats together like other airlines sometimes do for these situations, at least up to a certain age.
