Southwest reservation opening dates

Does souuthwest only open dates for and extra month at a time? I need to book for middle of Feb and end of April. I was worried I would have to do them all at the same time. (schoolvacation weeks and the cheap fares sell out fast!) but this last opening was only for 1 months worth of dates. Is that common?

Also, when the fares first open, I have been nocked out of my price and got the message - there are no more fares avaiable at that price - sometimes I can even get back in after that. Any helpful suggestions fo rbooking those cheap fares early?

The schedule released on Monday was 11/1 to 1/5. The next release is scheduled on 7/1 with dates to 2/12. They are trying to integrate AirTran so they are probably not releasing a large block at a time.
