Southwest Refund Anymore?

Good Morning All,

Years ago I had read on here that if you buy a ticket from Southwest and then the airfare goes down you can call them and get a refund on the difference and it worked for me.

Well, I've bought tickets on Southwest again and the airfare has gone down $30 a ticket and I bought 3 tickets. I called Southwest and she said they don't refund the difference in tickets.

has anyone done this lately and if so what number did you call?

Yes they do...I just did this on Sunday for tickets purchased in April. I was credited $44 per person. I called the number listed on the website.

She made the changes over the phone and transferred my early bird check in that I had already purchased.

I just did this, but I did it online. I did it through my Southwest account. There is a link on the reservation page to cancel or change. Click on change, select the new fare, even if it's the exact same flight, confirm, and the difference will be credited to you for use on a future flight. You use the credit in the future by using the confirmation number of this flight.

I hope that wasn't too confusing. I need more coffee!

You got a credit to use on another flight within a year of your original booking. This is not a refund. If you don't take another flight in this time period, you lose the money.

This is how SWA works. No actual refunds.

I am aware that it is a credit...that is why I said credited. I should have been a little more specific in explaining the adjustment.

I think the confusion is that the OP used the word "refund" a couple of times. Maybe that's where the mix-up is coming in when OP is talking to SWA on the phone?

You can get a cash refund if its within 24 hours of purchase but that's a government rule that applies to all US airlines.

Was just reading this thread and figured hmmm let me check our flights. Well lo and behold ours went down. Just received $111.00 credit which I know we will use within the year..

Keep in mind that the refunded credit can only be applied to another ticket that is issued in the same name as the ticket that the original credit came from... so if you have four people flying and you each got back a credit of $25, you don't actually have $100 in credit that you can use for a single ticket.

If you booked on points, however, you will get the refunded points back to your pool of points. We do this quite frequently, and it's one of the reasons why Southwest Rapid Reward points are so valuable. You can book a ticket for anyone, and if the price changes, you need to change the dates, cancel, etc... you get your points back immediately; it's not a credit that has to be used for the original ticket holder.
