Is it true that you can change a flight on Southwest without a penalty? Other airlines charge a $75-$100 penalty if you need to change date, time, etc of a flight. I don't see anything about such a penalty on the Southwest site and other posts here seem to indicate that you can make changes with Southwest (even to get a lower fare :)) without the penalty.

Please let me know if this is true!!

SWA does not charge a penalty for flight changes. If the new flight is more expensive, you of course, have to pay the difference.
If it is less expensive you can get the credit.

Just changed our tickets a couple of weeks ago to a different flight on same day and was actually cheaper. I got the credit.

Once I found out that SWA doesn't charge any penalty I went ahead and booked a flight home from WDW for early AM Dec. 11, ( the last day on their schedule). I am really hoping to get one for Dec.12, but got a great fare. If I can match my fare on 12/12 then I will make the change. If it will be significantly more then our trip will end up being a day shorter... the extra day isn't going to be worth the $300 difference in airfare. SWA is the best!

Thanks everyone for the replies! I went ahead and booked our flight to Orlando on Dec. 8 at a pretty decent rate: $105 one-way from Austin. Plus, it is a nonstop flight! That is very rare from Austin. I will have to wait for later dates to open up to book the return.

I can't believe I didn't know this about Southwest before. The fact that I can make changes without being penalized will definitely make me more likely to book with them first.

What part of Texas are you from?

We're trying to find a cheap way to fly out of Central(Brownwood) Texas leaving Dec 13th and returning the 19th

ARDisHog - We are in Austin. It looks like Brownwood is about the same distance from Austin as it is from DFW, so you could check both to see which has better fares. Southwest only has fares through Dec. 11 at this time though.

Thanks, That's good to know!
We've purchased our tix for the flight down on Dec. 9th. (Still waiting for the rest of December's fares to be listed to get the return tix). Hopefully our plans are solid, but you never know...
