I have a flight on pts. Can I modify my flight to the day before if available for cheaper pts and still keep my place in line with my paid 36 hr checkin.

Yes you can. We do this with every flight we book. My husband travels a lot for work and we have flown on his points for the last 7 years or so. As long as you do not cancel your flight, but you only change it, you do not lose your EBCI position.

And, unlike paying with cash, the extra points go back into your account and don't expire.

Yes you can move up your departure day by one day (or any number of days) in order to rebook for fewer points. As already stated, be sure you use the "Change" option, do NOT cancel and rebook. EBCI is tied to your confirmation number and that stays the same if you change your flights. If you cancel and rebook, you get a new confirmation number and your EBCI will be lost.

As to whether it impacts your place in the EBCI queue, at one time there was some evidence that it did. I'm not sure that is still the case. On our last trip I did reprice our flights at least once and we still got great boarding positions.

Your EBCI position is primarily based on the date/time of EBCI purchase. On your original flight, the date could put you 10th in the EBCI queue. If you change flights, that date might put you 1st in the new flight's queue - or 30th. You just never know. But the date won't change - only the relative position amongst all the other EBCI customers.
