Southwest how soon before flight can I cancel?

I love that if you change your ticket through Southwest the funds are kept in your Southwest account for another flight. I am set to fly Delta on May 21 one way to Disney THE MORNING OF our Disney Cruise. We picked Delta because their flights arrived so much earlier than Southwest's. Well with the possible Delta strike those tickets may end of being useless. We plan to fly down in September also so I was thinking about booking southwest flights also and then cancelling the day of or the day before if everything seems okay with Delta. Then I just use the credits for our September flight. Can I cancel up to the day of departure?

Yes, you can. I think you can even no show, get the credit, and your return will still be good.

However, that being said, if all things are equal, book two separate one ways, that way you can cancel the outbound if you get on the Delta flight, then for your return home, if things go sour while you are on your cruise, you have a good return flight that you can cancel when you get to the airport if Delta is still good.

Thats great I just booked Southwest. We are laready scheduled with them for the return flight (1 way) I have 1 way on Delta there. Like I said I prefer Southwest but hubby likes nonstop flights and the 1st nonstoip on Southwest didn't get in until 12:30 on the day of our cruise which cut it too close. Thats why I booked Delta, it gets in at 10:30. So now I also booked Southwest (the 1 stopover flight that gets in at 11:20 or so) its a back up plan anyway. I booked two of the seats as nonrefundable using travel funds I had and the other is fully refundable. How does fully refundable work? Anyone know?
