Is it possible with Southwest to call or go to the airport in the morning to see about an earlier flight without paying any extra? My husband is booked for an afternoon flight, and would like to leave earlier if possible. I'm within 7 days now, so wanna get away fares are no longer available, and we are not paying the regular fare rate to do it. But wondered if this was even a possibility, anyone know!? thanks!

I think you can request getting on a standby list for an earlier flight. My husband does this fairly regularly when traveling for work and his meetings end sooner than expected. If a change fee is charged, I don't think it's too significant, though I'm not positive about that (though I doubt his company would allow him to do that if it was expensive).

Southwest specifically is a little quirky when it comes to standby travel on discounted fares. Most airlines allow you to take an earlier flight if there is standby space available. You need a full-fare ticket to do that on SWA.

If you have a Business Select or Anytime fare, you can generally change flights (if seats are available) or without fare increase go stand-by. However, if you have a Wanna Get Away (discounted) fare you will have to pay full price before you can go standby. Per their policy, "Standby travel requires an upgrade to the Anytime fare".

More information is here: https://www.southwest.com/html/air/fare-information.html

bummer, I thought that may be the case. He'll just have to suck it up, since it was his call on the time when I originally booked it!

Have you checked the site to see if you can change to a different flight? Sometimes the cost is the same

It would have been Ok, had I not waited until we were within the 7 day window, now the price is twice as much. .... which is why he will just have to suck it up, since he couldn't make up his mind! lol
