Southwest Credit card questions :)

We are thinking of getting the Southwest credit card to help with flights to Ca next spring. (My neice is getting married) I wondering how many rewards will you need for a round trip ticket from the east coast to the westcoast? I know I have to pay for the card but I'm thinking it will be worth it in the long run. ?Will the points cover a round trip flight? We are a family of 6 grown-ups how many charge cards can we open per household? Thanks, I looked on the site and couldn't find my answers. Thanks so much

There are currently 2 cards out there that SW is offering. One with 20k pts and a $59 year fee and another for 30k pts and $99 yearly fee. If you went the 20k route that "might" get you 1 round trip ticket. My example was from SC to LA in Sept. The flight cost $194 which translates to 11,640 need to cash in on the same ticket. So the cheaper the fare the less rewards you need to cash in. Like I said 20k "could" get you 1 round trip ticket. Like a $148 ticket cost 8,880 points.

You can figure out the calculations by looking at the cost of the fare and how many points you will get from purchasing that fare. Once you know the points 900 pts, you can x that by 1000 and that's how much that flight cost in points, ex 9,000 pts.

I have a SW card. For regular purchases, you get one point for every $60 you spend. But for SW purchases and their partner purchases(hotels and car rental), you get at least one point for every $30 you spend. This is better than many cards like the Disney Visa that usually gives one point per $100. There is a flight tracker that you can use on the SW rewards site. You tell it where you are going and it estimates the points to purchase. Another thing that I just found out is that you can always buy one way with points and one way with cash.

Thought of another thing. The points seem to be pretty close to other reward cards in purchasing power. A Hertz $100 gift card costs 10,000 points but instead of having to charge $10,000, you only have to charge $6000 with the SW card.

20,000 points is a good start. Oakland CA to Orlando round trip is about 26,000.

I just signed up for the 20K ($69fee) SW Visa last month. I have my paperwork here and it says you get 1 point for every $1 spent, not $60. You get 2 points for every $1 for SW air, and Rapid Reward hotel & car rental partners. Much better rate than my Disney Visa!

You can also earn points with the Rapid Rewards dining program. You register a credit or debit card (doesn't have to be theirs), eat at a participating restaurant and earn, I believe, 3 points for every dollar you spend. You also get several points (I think about 300) for your first $25 dining out time and review.
