I was thinking of becoming one. More because I want to get a bunch of stuff from them and thinking that I would get a good discount. I LOVE their stuff.

Anyone a consultant? How do you like it? Do you make fairly good money for your time?

Any advice would be appreciated!!

I did it for two years literally just for the discount for my own personal stuff. I only did one catalog party - home party sales just isn't my thing. It was pretty hot around here for awhile but has now died off. Honestly, if you wanted as much of the stuff as I did, it's a good deal to join. If you're doing it as an income maker, I'd see what the interest level in your area is first. Around here, everyone has all the Southern Living stuff they want and aren't interested in anymore parties.

Yes, I am really just wanting to get the discount for my own purchases!

Can you tell me how much of a discount you get?

It's 40% off retail - you still gotta pay shipping. If you've got a close friend or relative who wouldn't mind you letting them just use their name - I used my mom - and would key it in as if I was having a party, mom was the guest, and I could take advantage of the hostess specials. Winter clearance stuff is AWESOME prices!! And I got several discontinued items dirt cheap, as in under $10.

Yes!!! I have been a consultant for 6 years. PM me for more information in specific, so this isnt too long of a post...
New catalog starts Aug. 1, the best yet. I do it mainly to earn my own product as well, works great that way. At the end of each catalog they do a clearance sale with drastically reduced prices, going on now, things sell out really fast but I get tons of orders during this time. Next month is also Double Hostess Dollars month, so if you wanted alot of stuff free in the midst of deciding whether to become a consultant or not, you could do a catalog party and earn twice as much stuff free as a hostess normally would, plus free shipping, some 1/2 priced items, hostess and customer specials, etc.

Let me know if I can help you.

My best friend is also a consultant. She loves doing this. Last year she earned a free trip to Hawaii!!! She had not worked away from home for years. I was quite surprised that she jumped into this and has done as well as she has.

I do think though that the newness has worn off quite a bit, or maybe it's just the economy that has slowed down her parties. So you may want to think about that before you sign on.

What ever you decide, have fun.

Forgive my ignorance (I am a Yankee), but what is a Southern Living Home Consultant? I do subscribe to the Southern Living Magazine and I do have a nice wrought iron cookbook holder from Southern Living, but have never heard of at home parties or being a home consultant. Can someone fill me in?
Thanks,
Jenny

Southern Living at Home is a division of the magazine. They do sales through home parties via consultants (kind of like Pampered Chef).

I love their stuff. Lots of wrought iron and it is very high quality. You can view their catalog online at www.southernlivingathome.com. I was wondering if it would be worth it to become a consultant just to get the discount. I could possible have a few friends host a party for me, but I am not looking to do this full-time.

I am a consultant as well. I got into it as "I want that kit!!!" It has been well worth doing it for getting products for my house. I have done a total of about 10 parties over the course of 2 years. I am not a party consultant- although the parties I have done were great parties with 25% commission for me! Basically my earnings went right into products for me again! I have gotten lots of sale items for gifts (weddings, teacher gifts, birthdays, etc).
I have not been to the conferences or won trips, but I never went into it for the $, really. I teach full time and I don't have the time for director or such.
I do know that with our recent economy dip, people are not buying "wants" much right now. Hopefully this will change later, but it never hurts to go ahead and start the business and build slowly with friends and family. Good luck!!!
