Southern California Fires?

Just dropping in with a  and prayers for everyone affected by this.

I have had to evacuate before due to wildfire and understand the fear of not knowing if you will have a home to return to (we did). I also understand how the sky turns black and rains ash and burns your eyes and your throat and how the smell does not go away for days.

:grouphug:

Good thoughts and pixie dust to everyone affected by the fires.

You have got to be kidding me! I living in southern Arizona and we've been planning a trip to DLR for 2 1/2 months, I am planning, no wait, I AM proposing to my girlfriend on this trip. I cannot postpone it, there are 4 of us going and we all took days off to go. We are heading up there this friday in the morning (11/21) and I pray to God that this clears up, a trip this special cannot be ruined like this! :sad2:

We will wear masks if needed, this trip is HAPPENING BABY! well, on the bright side, the lines actually might be shorter unlike what the person up there said because a lot of people might cancel their trips.
Aww, how exciting for you! Your trip cannot be ruined by the smokey air if you don't let it. Take it slow, drink a lot of water, and enjoy a very magical time of your life. Your trip is still 5 days away, happy thoughts! :goodvibes And btw, we expect an engagement re-cap when you return!

Awe, thank you! I didnt mean to be selfish earlier, i do really feel for the people have to leave their homes, that would be too hard for me to do, but this is the biggest event in my life coming up and I just want it to be special!

I love Disneyland and know how much fun it can be, but people should be really clear on how potentially dangerous this smoke is. These fires generate a lot of microparticles PM2.5 at various elevations depending on the wind and temperature. Many of these particles go into your lungs and don't come out. Ever. Not good. It sounds like many trips to Disneyland are completely discretionary - If so, then wait until the fires are out, the smoke has cleared and you can go have fun without worrying. Disneyland will be there in a week, a month, a year and beyond.

If you are heavily invested in tickets, hotel stays, etc., you'll have to weigh the cost or effort of changing plans, with the long-term health effects especially if you are bringing young children or older family members. Any respiratory problem, whether it is a simple cold or condition like asthma can be made worse by these particles. If I had to decide whether going to Disneyland this month was worth the risk of effects on my children (or GRANDPARENTS!!!) in 1, 5, 10 or even more years from now, I'd say no. Up to you, of course, but I strongly suggest if it's a toss-up, that you let time pass for the particulates to go away. Ideally, it would rain sometime but this is Southern Cal and that sounds far-fetched... :)

I saw on the news just now that they see the winds are slowly starting to change directions and through overnight and into tomorrow they will be easterly and bring in some ocean moisture. I think that's the best news I've heard all day, for the people of the area and secondly, for my arrival on Tuesday.

I am praying it goes away before we get there in a week.

and I'm praying for those affected by the fires. I know first hand how scary it is.

We were there several years ago one October when they had bad fires. The smoke and ash was bad, but we still had a great time. But then again where we live during the summer there are lots of fires around. It's hard to stay away from the smoke when you live there ya know!

Of course if I had a health condition that effected my breathing, I would more then likely consider rescheduling. Or if the fires were very close to DL. But otherwise we'd go. There were some days we were there during those fires that were clear and the smoke wasn't all that bad. You just never know!

My prayers are with those who have left their homes, or have lost their homes!

This was last updated at 4pm. Does anyone know if the Triangle fire is at all contained? Has it spread even more? We are in Sac so our news is not constantly running about the fires, although we are getting a lot of coverage. I hope the wind changes bring good news for the fires and for DL resort.

Did anyone go last night to the hunt?

it's getting smokey over here in Camarillo. not sure if it's from SB or from Sylmar.

Blech. It's a little bit smokey here in Oxnard too. It wasn't earlier, around 2:00ish, but we have the back screen door open right now and I can smell the faint smokiness. I haven't heard anything on the news about the SB fire, so I just figured they contained it. From my house you can see the hills to the South and you can see the smoke.

I just saw on the news that 3 hotels are Harbor are letting fire victims stay there at a discount. The Anabella, some Ramada on South Harbor (I think it's the Maingate Limited North), and one other hotel I can't remember....

Hello All, A little OT, but still about the fires

We just got back from taking a bunch of high school kids on a youth group trip to six flags magic mountain, in Valencia, CA. We left Friday around 6 PM from AZ. Around 11 PM we stared seeing smoke near southern california. After some bus breaking down complications we started entering the Sylmar(spelling?) fire area around 4:30 AM. The flames were literally next to the freeway. It was frightening as an adult and many kids were scared as well. If we had gone through even 10 minutes later, I'm sure we would have been stopped and turned around.

Then on Saturday, Magic Mountain was only open until 12 because many workers could not get there because of freeway closures. Our kids had a pretty good attitude considering all the things that went wrong (check out my TR on the california boards for more details).

At our hotel we stayed at there where families that had been evacuated. The kids were really reminded of what is really important in life and it was a great way for them to understand that even though we weren't able to go to the park, at least we will have a home to go to. If anything, they really learned about compassion.

Last night we also had to pack up everything because there we were possibly going to be evacuated from the hotel because of the Newhall Fire. Luckily that was not the case and we stayed and got some sleep.

On our way home today we passed the mobile home park :sad1: . It was very sad and my hearts went out to anyone who lost their home, and the families of those people as well. Yes, our trip couldn't have been worse, but we all came back healthy (for the most part) and safe. We pray for those families who are still in waiting and for those who already know. What a devastating thing to see on TV, but so much more real and sad to see up close. (For those interested, we took the 210 to the 10 home and only saw smoke, no visible flames.)

So here is my  to all of you out there who are near the fires or know someone who is. I sincerely hope and pray the best for you.

Npoon, OFF TOPIC: what did you decide about how to get down to DLR? You had started a thread last week, asking about ways to get down to DLR other than renting a car, I think. Correct? What did you decide to do? I am curious!

Just got back from our trip and as everyone else mentioned, the air was horrible and ashes everywhere. Couldn't get them out of our hairs fast enough. There were people walking around with masks/bandannas/etc anything to cover the nose and mouth. It was just absolutely a horrible time. Tried to make the best of it and still had a great time despite the bad conditions.

On our way home, we took I5 and right before you get to Magic Mountain, you can see the fire from the freeway. The highway wasn't closed or anything so no problem getting through.

Hi new to the board.....we are going on trip nov 23 and wondering about the fires there.....and if its safe to go.....thanks!

The winds were calm yesterday and they were able to do a great job with the air attack on the fires. It's really something else to see a huge DC-10 flying so low. There still fires burning in Diamond Bar which is east of DL, but it's about 20% contained. I'm guessing they'll be able to get a good hold of it today.

My family homes are all okay. It was a pretty close call.

The air still smells of smoke, but it's not nearly as bad as Saturday. The winds are still faily calm, so the smoke is just lingering around. It's not blowing out of the area. The forecast for the next few days is for calm winds and a little easterly. Each day the air quality will get better and I'm guessing by Thursday, the air will be back to our normal smog.

Some of the weather models are hinting to another Santa Ana wind condition next week. Let's hope not. That's all we need for Thanksgiving!

Driving into work this morning was pretty ominous, seeing the burnt hills and hilltop homes completey gone!! I feel so bad for those people.

The fireman were so GREAT! These guys really are heros!!
