So is South of the Border even a little bit worth the stop??

Driving from PA to Myrtle Beach and last time my dad talked us out of going that way. But this time SIL and I are taking the kids and thought it would be fun.

Plus anyone know how far we would be from Myrtle Beach, actually Murrells Inlet at that point??

We do love tourist trap type places.

My DS traveled from NY to Florida for years with his dad - South of the Border was the highlight of his trip! If you love a tourist trap, it's for you.

We live in Pawleys Island (just south of Murrells Inlet) and South of the Border is about 2 hours away from us with light traffic.

South of the Border is a total tourist mecca. I find it funny how they theme it all up and try to Disney-fy it!

We go to South of the Border each time we dirve down to Florida , usually every february and august.:dance3:! It's hokey, alot is closed, but we love it just the same. We take pictures each time, and it's amazing seeing DD's growth by looking at the pictures.

It kills time, looking for the billboards and we enjoy the drive that much more! By the time we hit South of the Border, it really feels as if our vacation has begun! Ice cream and fun house mirrors, giant zebrzs and apes, how can you go wrong? :lmao:

If you've never been to South of the Border, it is worth the stop. It's right off of 95, might take you 30 minutes there and you can build a bathroom break into it to make it a worthwhile stop.

Once you are there Myrtle Beach is about an hour to your east as an FYI.

Thanks for the info.

Like I said, my DF talked us out of going last time we drove. Looking forward to it. Now I just have to figure out how to get there.

I'm assuming I will just take 95 all the way to SOB and then map it from there to Murrells Inlet.

You have to go there at least once. For me its very nostalgic from when i was a kid and we stopped a few times. Now im bringing my family. If anything you can get some good photo ops there. What kid doesnt like a giant pedro & ape. My husband didnt want to spend too much time there but we did get to at least take some pictures, look in the gift shop, and use the restrooms ( i would have liked to stay a bit longer though for the kids). Well see for our trip in August

Was a favorite stop for our NY to Disney trips years ago...brings back memories..........
five kids in the back of a station wagon.......
and those YUMMY buckets of Home Cooked Fried Chicken!:lmao:

Not sure which is worse, no seat belts (years ago) or all the fried chicken we ate? :rotfl2: :rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2:

Say hi to pedro for me. :lmao:

I love stopping at South of the Border. We always stop on our way to Myrtle Beach for our Summer vacation. It the highlight of our trip down from NJ, and lets us know we are almost there.

I love SOB! It's tacky and touristy with lots if neon and blinky lights; what could be better? If nothing else, it's makes for a few good laughs. :thumbsup2

Pedro's Forecast: Chili Today, Hot Tamale! :lmao:

Does anybody know what happened to all the signs leading up to South of the Border ?

A lot of the signs are still there as you travel down 95. I think there are still over 100 of them. Some of them have in decay and have trees that need to be trimmed. But make no mistake...you can't miss the signs.

REALLY ? We drive down every August and from back in the early 90's to now. It looks like a lot less signs.

Unfortunately, there are a lot less signs now for South of the Border.
I think they have been replaced with JR's signs now in Wilson, NC.

I know every year there were less and less. It was fun and a pass time reading them on the way down.

I was searching for I-95 info and found this thread, I'll give it an unintended bump by offering my opinion that a stop at SOB will be a waste of time. DW and I stopped there on various trips to FL over the years, and a year ago we stopped there with DD on our first family trip to the World. SOB was dumpy and somewhat seedy as a previous poster said. This year on our way to WDW we'll be driving right by SOB.

Just don't stop to use the bathrooms!!! Yuck!:scared1:

I'll second this! By far the most disgusting bathroom I've ever seen and I've been to Tijuana. I'm not a germaphobe either, in fact I don't think I've ever used Purell in my life and I was still totally grossed out.

Pedro says, just keep right on going....the signs are much better than the actual stop.

Wow, I didn't even realize it was still open. We drove down to Myrtle Beach last year and SOB looked deserted to us!

Mary :santa:
